I didn't even know they made Distillate guitars, but I had seen the single PU Japanese basses.

Off topic, but,

Can someone tell me why guitar players never seem to trim their strings?

All that jiggery-pokery stuff makes me worry I'm going to poke my eye out.

I think they're just lazy.  Either that, or the only time they change a string is when they break it in the middle of  a gig.

I think some of them also think it looks cool.

Maybe he doesn't have any wire cutters.

Hi Effclef,

Disttilate basses are available in Japanese market very often but guitars are a few. I found two Disttilate guitars now on sale. (http://www.digimart.net/pub_key_gk_list.do?cls=1&cno2=&cnm2=&cnm1=&keyword=alembic&cno1= target=_blank)

My single PU Disttilate bass is in Showcase. (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=9085)

Back in the day there was a school of thought that held that cutting off the ends destroyed the integrity of the string & made the sound dead.  This was, of course, entirely drug-induced (mostly the same guys who claimed that pulling the covers off of humbuckers made them louder).

The electronics have been gutted; but otherwise a very nice looking guitar.

Thank you for the info, Toshiaki. It appears this did not sell at $1800 to start, and the seller relisted it again, same price. Maybe he should try a lower starting bid.

The digimart basses and guitars look interesting! What is the story with this bolt-on Alembic? Is it an Alembic neck cut and put on another body? It has the logo!

Sorry, I cannot get the link to paste correctly, but they are on the page you posted.

And this one (no logo)

EffCleff,

There was a short period when Alembic licensed their name to be put on basses and guitars built in Japan (only a couple of dozen were actually built) and with Alembic electronics.

Recent thread here - Ever seen these? (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=3637).

Ah, thanks Adriaan, I hadn't followed that area of the Club in a while so missed that recent posting.
