I'm having to pull myself away from the bid button here....that Elan is calling my name.

Just noticed on the larger pictures of the Spoiler that there is what looks to be a large black plastic trim piece around the jack- perhaps a ripped out jack and the plastic is there to cover the wood damage....

Either way, tons of great basses (Alembic and others) up by this fellow right now.  It would be a great time to pull the trigger if anyone is intersted.  Very reasonable starting bids.

Looks like a solid maple body (no top) on the fretless Spoiler...?

He picked the wrong time of year to clean the music closet.
Ebay is really slow right now, so someone could get a great deal on these.

Regarding that Spoiler 5'er, from the owner:

This work was done before I purchased it..used, of course. The
triangular piece was probably in place as either a preemptive
move or a reactive repair. Alembics have at times a propensity to
crack on the tops at the 1/4 jack..some people use large
washers as well..not uncommon to see.

 oh well......

I wish I had cash on hand. These are good prices.
I bought an injured exploiter w/double p pups, 2 vol 1 tone with a ripped out 1/4 in jack. The only real way to repair it is to replace the top. Not worth the cost for my needs.

Following up on what Danno said; one way to make the purchase of an injured Alembic work would be to send it to Alembic and have them make a custom bass for you.  For instance, in a case like the Spoiler where there is damage around the input jack, you can have custom inlays done on the top, like the bat inlays we've seen on a few basses, plus a refinish, satin finish the neck, and upgrade the electronics to Europa or Signature, and voila, a one of a kind custom Alembic.

Here, here! That's what I did when I purchased my Elan 5'er several years ago. I bought it off ebay knowing it would need some work. I wanted a Wineburst finished instrument and that was cheaper path than a new order. As usual, Alembic treated me as though I was ordering a high-end Series 2. What great people!

Hi. I was the winner of the ebay auction for the Spoiler 5 string. This will be my first Alembic.

After reading posts for the last few months; this Spoiler appeared to have the combination of features that I was looking for. The price point was also very appealing.

The community seems to be very active and a wonderful source of information and support.

Someone got the Spoiler 4 (a club member too, i think)... I was on the fence about that one, but decided against it.

Thanks Dave

I would like to pursue an upgrade in electronics and some sort of repair to the input jack of my injured 5 string. What would the process entail?

I understand that this may not be the best time with the new addition and all.

You would need to call the shop and speak with someone there.  You may want to have some ideas in mind.  For instance, a top mounted cavity plate in a contrasting wood might be an idea; like the plate on this bass (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=7734).  Or they may even be able to find a wood that's similar to the very nice top wood that your bass already has.  As for the electronics, at the very least you could have them replace the selector switch with a pan, unless you prefer the selector.  And you could also have them add bass and treble boost/cut switches.  Upgrading to a second filter and Q switch would probably be a bit more involved.  The seller mentioned some screws with rust, so you may want to have them replace those as well.

This is a very nice bass with that top and the Purpleheart lams.  With an inlay on the top, a refinish may be needed; but that should address what the seller described as bumps, dimples and dents.  Also, I would recommend getting a satin-feel finish on the neck.  Oh, and aluminum side dots while you're there.

All of this may be more than what you had in mind.  I'm just kinda throwing out ideas.  When I sent my Essence to the shop, I tried to think of everything I might want to have done to it since it was going to be there anyway; then when I called, we had a good starting point for deciding what we wanted to do.

I like the idea of adding bass and treble boost/cut switches and replacing the selector switch with a pan. I'll have to give some more thought to a plate or inlay piece before I
contact the shop.

It will be hard to part with so soon after getting it.

Thank you for your ideas and guidance.
