Title: Suggest a Power Amp for me (on a budget)
Post by: connor on October 22, 2010, 04:42:21 PM: Right now my rig consists of an Alembic F-2B and SF-2. Unfortunately I'm on a tight budget and can only afford a power amp in the $300-$400 range. Any suggestions?

Post by: David Houck on October 22, 2010, 05:35:53 PM: Glancing at Ebay I see that in the last two weeks three QSC PLX 2402s have sold in that range. This would suggest that this is the market for that amp and that you should be able to find one fairly soon at that price. However all three listings appeared to be from 'shops' rather than individual owners; so that may be a factor.

What kind of cab or cabs are you driving? You should be looking for something that matches up with the ohm and watts ratings of your cabs.

I bought it in 2004 from Bass Northwest for $825.
Perfect condition, always in a rackcase.
400w x 2 @ 8 ohms
650w x 2 @ 4 ohms
2100w bridged @ 4 ohms

Post by: skyboltone on November 21, 2010, 05:10:44 PM: This may be the worst idea ever but; with that kind of front end why not use a Crown USA made PA amp. Strapped or paralleled for proper match to your cabinet. I bought a Crown Com Tech 400 for under $100 shipped. This is no lightweight though. Easily 40 lbs and no knobs. It's meant to take your pre output (through whatever effects) and make it big. Crown has proprietary circuitry to protect the amp from subsonic oscillations too. Pretty tough animals.

They sound so much like my Alembic FX-1, I don't need to take one to gigs. Cheep, reliable, and sounds great. It is a big improvement over past Hartke ambs. $350 new and it blows doors.

Post by: edwin on December 12, 2010, 11:54:49 PM: My Crest CA9 was within your budget from ebay and is amazing. If you can deal with the weight, I highly recommend the CA6 or CA9.

Post by: 2400wattman on December 13, 2010, 12:28:22 AM: I must concur with Edwin on the Crest amps. I had a CA6 and deeply regret selling it. Weight issues aside they are the stoutest amps on the market for being two space-they are deep though. I would consider putting it in it's own rack and putting your preamps and efx in another rack to distribute the weight. They're worth every penney.

I have experience with the Electro-Harmonix 22 Calibre amp. I was not happy with it. Yes, it's amazing that a little pedal-sized box can do what it does...it gets fairly loud... but... it goes into distortion very easily, and that distortion was not smooth and creamy. When I hooked it up to a real articulate speaker I was not happy with the sound the amp was sending. Another thing: E-H said the amp was compatible with a 4-ohm speaker, which turned out to be not true. I pinned them on it and they said I was correct. But they did not offer to take it back; they just said to try to return it to the dealer. Not good service.
Now they have a 44-watt version; perhaps it is far superior to the 22 Calibre. But I would need to be sure it was what I need and not trust what their ads say.
I wouldn't even bother to try it for bass guitar applications.
