Considering that the $7000 opening bid is already more than twice the likely fair market value, I think I'll be letting this one pass.  It is pretty though, and only 12 serial numbers older that my '76 Series I.  I really like the case it's in.  And I'd love to see a picture of the Gibson Princeton Black Face amp the guy is offering the winner an option to purchase.  Maybe he also has an old Fender Les Paul hanging around!  lol

What kind of wood is that?  I wonder why there aren't more pictures.  It looks immaculate!  Is it really worth $7000?  I don't see any bids yet.  How much does a case like that cost?  I would like a carriage like that for my future baby!  It looks a lot better than mine. But looks aren't everything.

I would like to dream that it was worth that much... would double my twos values.. but compared to a new one a good deal I guess.

The seller says it would cost over $15k new. What features does this instrument have that would push the price that high? Shouldn't you expect 20-25% off list for new?

Series I list for $13.5k so that would be around $10k.

Todd.

speaking of a blackface princeton... I do happen to have a 64 fender princeton reverb for sale if anyones interested. I dont know what that guy thinks hes talking about! If he knew anything about guitars he wouldnt have made such a mistake... but then again hes got one hell of a series 1, but 7,000, thats asking a little much dont you think?

Personally I think $7K is a lot much.  IIRC, a Series I recently went on ebay to a buyer in Australia with BIN for about $4500 or $5000.  This was, by far, the most I've seen a Series guitar go for on ebay in the last three years.  They come up very occasionally (3-4 times per year?) and usually go in the $2500-$3200 range.

As for woods, it looks to me like Bird's-eye maple with a little quilt on the front, and BEM with a little flame on the back.

As for the case, I did a little research and it seems they are known for being very protective AND very heavy.

Nice tailpiece, and interesting electronics!  It's hard for me to tell from the pics, but in addition to what must be a master volume, this guitar looks like it may have mellow filters.

OK, I'll bite; what are mellow filters, Dave?

olie,
the case was just listed separately on evilbay...if I spent that much on the guitar it seems the case would be included.

cheers

The pictorial evidence might suggest that mellow filters are ancient Alembic mythology, but they apparently did appear on some early guitars.  Mica's description is mellow filters are specifically for guitars, and produce a less harsh result than the low pass filters alone, especially when the low-pass is tuned to a high frequency. They do this by having a very gentle roll off, abour 3db/octave.  Normal filter roll off on Alembic low pass filters is 12db/octave.

I've been negotiating with the seller all week but the seller chose to pass on my offer. If anyone else has a nice Series one they'd like to let go of, I'd try to offer a generous price - just not quite the $$$ this seller had in mind.

Cheers, Peter

Boy, that is a rather sweet looking Series one.  Too bad it's so pricey (as others have said).  He'll come out of it and sell it for a more reasonable price I'm sure...unless someone like me who is  weak gets a good look at it AND has the cash to back it up( I DON'T have the cash  )

He has lowered his starting bid. It is now $6000.

But notice he has dropped the case. It used to be included, now it is available to be purchased separately.

There is no mention of the mysterious amplifier.

Todd.

You are right Todd.  In fact, the last time he offered it with the case and indicated that he had another case that could be purchased separately.
