Title: Adamas Graphite 2mm Guitar Pick
Post by: tdukes on March 28, 2009, 09:41:27 AM
I saw this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220379867822&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching) pick on ebay and was curious so I placed a $10 bid. Apparently I wasn't curious enough, I was immediately outbid. Has anyone here tried these picks? What are they like?

I went back and won it with a $12.18 bid. I used to use agate picks but my knuckle on my index finger started to bother me so I had to stop. I have been using the 2.0mm Dunlop stubbys. They are not quite the same, but my hand is happy. Ever since I have been looking for something that is even more similar to the agate but doesn't cause intense pain.

Sorry for the misleading title. It should have been 'Adamas Graphic 2mm Guitar Pick'.

When I worked at GC (oh, the shame of it all!) in '83-'84, they carried these.  I bought 6 or 8 of them just before leaving their employ; lost the last one about '96, and have been looking for them ever since!  Any other pick that thin is much floppier, and anything else that stiff is so thick it takes 2 hands to hold - plus, they've got a raised logo, which steadies the grip nicely.  I'd need to be much wealthier than I am to spend $12 on a pick, but that one would tempt me.  If you don't like it, my birthday is Thursday........

I've got a bunch of these and will sell them for $3 apiece plus shipping (they cost a little more than first class because they create a bump in the envelope). Let me know!

Flax, Did they not actually have any in stock?

I got the pick I ordered. I like the sound. It is actually a little more flexible than the Dunlop stubby's.

I heard about those, that Phil Lesh used them, and was curious how they would feel and sound. I met Phil briefly at a book-signing and asked him how I could get one. He reached into his pocket and gave me....  a Dunlop Triangle Stubby.

FWIW -- I also have a couple Adamas 2mm (I was curious for all the same reasons and picked some up), and I also prefer the 2mm Dunlop Big Stubbies for my style of play. I feel that the Stubbies have a smoother release than the Adamas, and personally prefer the tone of the Stubbies, too (I find the Adamas too clicky, especially on an acoustic).

But then again, I'm a guitar player (and a flatpicker to boot), so your results may definitely vary.

I have never tried or even heard of these adamas picks before, but I have been an exclusive Dunlop 3mm Big Stubbies user for years. I don't like plectrums that flex at all other than for strumming on an acoustic guitar.

What is it that is supposed to be so special about these Adamas picks then?

just what you said: graphite has absolutely no flex at all, but is very light. gives terrific, nuanced control over dynamics and tone. and a very clean but not brittle attack. they're all I've used for the last several years.

Have any of you ever tried Vpicks? Not sure if any bass players appreciate them, but I like them a lot. I was surprised by how nice they were. I want to try one of these Adamas ones too.

I haven't seen these before, but I have ordered 3 different styles to try.

Right now my favorite is the jazz amber pick from picks and stones, but it is fairly expensive and is already showing wear marks.

Hello Russ --

Thanks for the head's up on the V-Picks -- my first order arrived Friday, and I'm already a convert! I find them to be even faster than the Stubbies, with an even smoother release. Highly recommended!

I have made my 2nd order of V-Picks. They made much more of an impression on me than the Adamas pick did. The small pointed is now my new favorite pick.

Thanks to Russ (zappahead) for pointing them out. I would have never found out about them otherwise. I keep holding out on ordering a Colossal (8.85 mm thick) or a Insanity (11.85 mm thick), but I know it will eventually happen just because I want to see one.

Todd.

ps. Did you just have a Phiga Casta on ebay?

Hey Guys...where does 2mm fall in terms of Fender's thin, med, heavy and extra heavy picks?

I couldn't find anything on the Fender site. Wikipedia has a  chart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_pick) that says:

Text description Approximate thickness Other possible marks   mm inch   Extra light/thin = 1.50 >= .060

Who knows how accurate it is? But, that would put 2mm as way thick.

The dark purple one in the Dunlop Delrin 500 series is 2 mm.

It could be 'cause I'm used to big old bass strings, but on guitar I can't get used to those floppy picks.
