Title: Mis-Labelled New Old Stock Series I on eBay
Post by: poor_nigel on February 04, 2010, 06:24:39 PM
The seller thinks he has a Signature Standard, but this surely looks like a Series I with burl maple tops and backs for $7,500 - New Old Stock (NOS) - New!  Somebody has not jumped this yet????????

Yeah I just noticed and emailed the seller for confirmation. I wondered also if it was a signature bass but prepared for series electronics. But then the description states the SC-1 electronics and psu it must be a series bass.

I have placed a bid, can never get rid of the Alembic itch!  The bass is relatively close to my office and I am getting ready to visit to see if it is worth a higher bid.

Would you get the DS-5 if the instrument was just prepared for series electronics?

Funny thing is, I advertised my mint and much better finished bass on this forum and everyone said it was overpriced, yet it works out a few hundred dollars more for one this side of the pond in the UK!

Jazzyvee, you can have mine in the UK if you're interested and after import duties and shipping it's a steal.......go on, you know you want to!

Hey Paul:

Mint is used, and a term assigned by the seller.  NOS is new old stock.  Unplayed, sold as new with full factory warranty.  If you buy it, you go into Alembic's records as the original owner.  I do not mean to argue with you, but I do not believe yours is NOS.  You are a person selling a used item, where the eBay item is being sold by a dealer as brand new.  Bottom line is something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.  A lot of Alembics are on the market at prices that leave them unsold.  I find $7,500 to be a good price for a brand new Series I with $3,000 worth of upgraded wood, and if I were in the market for a point shaped LSB 4, I would have popped the BIN and never brought it to anyone's attention here, except to post pix in the Showroon section, later.  If it was an omega cut bass, same result, and I would have called it an investment, giving myself a thin 'reason' to have two omega cut LSB 4 Alembic basses.  And everone here should know by now, Alembics are bought for love of the instruments, not as investments, as new ones lose so much value as soon as they become 'used' instruments.

It's still 8 years old regardless.

My bass was sat on a wall, never played for 7 years so should I argue mine is only 6 years old?

Neither one is selling, so it seems they are both listed too high for the current markets, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Hi Angelboy, anything is possible for the right price but not at the moment as I have blown my Alembic budget on a series guitar last year so the pot needs to be replenished before I can splash out on anything else.
However I'm very receptive to gifts. ... :-)

But that was a very nice series guitar you got Jazzy.

I just looked at the auction. It looks like they figured out it was a series. If no-one is bidding $7500, might as well raise the price to $12,500.

One can purchase a more recent Series I bass for the new asking price.  You may even be able to get a series II at the new asking price. The current list price is not as relevant as what the list price was in 2002.  I agree that unlike vintage Fenders our Alembics do not appreciate in value, so one must look for the true bargain to net a gain.  Still, I put in a bid, and the seller did attempt to contact him.  Finally, the Power Supply had better be included at the inflated price.

$12,500!!!......All of a sudden my bass is looking like a very reasonable price!

poor_nigel - I had an offer of ?4k in the recession.....I'd say it's work an extra 0.1% now we're out of it ;)

Jazzyvee - I can give you an Alembic Series I bass if you like................ sorry I mean a PHOTO of an Alembic Series I...

If I'm buying a 2002 instrument, I honestly wouldn't care whether it was NOS or mint: I would only consider the purchase if I'm getting it at a used price.  Otherwise, I'm having it built to MY specs.  $12,500 is more than was paid for this bass in 2002 isn't it?

I bought a 10 yr old NOS Orion guitar from Germany and apart from having to tighten up the controls due to the pots shaking during transit and shorting out,  it was perfect. The bodywork was completely untouched and the price I negotiated was what I would have expected to pay for a used alembic guitar.

This looks uncannily like a bass sold by GGuitars in 2002 - I was going to buy it then, and at that time it was offered to me at $7000. I hope this isn't the same bass, because if it is then it is definitely not NOS lol

And the rabbit hole gets deeper and deeper . . .  Hey Paul, do you remember or have the serial number written down somewhere?  This bass being sold at $12,500 is not a 'good' deal.  At $7,500 for NOS, it was a good deal.  If it is a used bass, the seller is breaking the law.  NOS indicates the warranty is still covered, and I doubt Alembic will honor it if not sold by the original dealer to the first owner.  Hmmmm, possible unhappiness afoot.

It does look like the NOS bass that was brokered to Kevin (kmh3..) after sitting in the GGuitars showroom for several years.... IIRC it was an '02 SI and was sold around '05-06.... If it was liquidated, changed hands a few times and the new 'owner' never turned in the warranty card, is it still NOS?

I don't know... I suspect it will have to drop another $2000 or so for it to get any real interest.

...I mean, if that's really a NOS with full factory warranty.

I have the same exact bass.  I bought mine used in 2001 or 2002 for $3900.00.

For this to be truly NOS with a warranty wouldnt it have to be sold from the original dealer it was shipped to?

Series Is go for around $3500 - $4000 all the time (I paid $3500 for mine... it's in pristine condition).  This one would not need the electronics upgrade; therefore, I'd be willing to go another $1000.  But unless this particular bass had the EXACT specs you were looking for, I don't think anyone would really care whether it was NOS or not... it's 8 yrs old.

Mike, good to know for the future. Thanks !
