hehehe, I knew someone would ask that question. Hard to say really. It doesn't sound bad just a bit harsh for my needs. I don't play in rock bands so I tend to go for a more  mellow melodic tone say like Santana or Scott Henderson, Bill Connors or Frank Gambale.
 
I've been holding off buying an o/d pedals because I've not been doing guitar gigs for a while and whilst demo's on manufacturers sites and you tube are interesting, there aren't any with alembics so It's a bit risky to buy on spec and hope to get a refund if it isn't producing the goods. In actual fact I did a guitar gig this week and took one of my other non alembic guitars instead because two tracks required overdrive. But it would have been great to take the alembic because it was a televised gig for the BBC.

Its good to know that a skylark can at least get some of that overdriven crunch to it. The main reason behind me selling my series I was the fact that it sounded terrible with any overdrive box, and I use quite a lot of tube screamer.

I've been playing with a new (to me) OD.  The Pigtronix Aria with a 3 band EQ built in.  I like it - really creamy tones and you can dial in the amount of dirt as it has both gain and volume controls.  And it seems to get along with my Alembics.  When I chain it into my Seymour Duncan Twin Tube, things can really get interesting! If you're looking for something a little more extreme, you might check out their Polysaturator or Disnortion units.  I also recently picked up their Philospher's Tone Compressor which has replaced my AnalogMan modded DynaComp.

I've always wanted to try some of the Pigtronix stuff.  That delay in particular looks really wild.  
 
I just picked up a Zvex Distortron, and I've been really pleased with it.  Granted, I'm not using it with an Alembic, but it doesn't seem finicky and I'm betting it would sound fine with active electronics.  It advertises itself as the sound of a non-master volume Marshall with everything on 10, but I think that sells it short.  It can also get some really great mild overdrive sounds as well.

So, they're saying it's precisely everything that makes me prefer Fenders?

Funny you say that, I'm actually using it with my early 70's non-master volume Pro-Reverb. The result is kind of a strange hybrid of the two.  Something a bit bassier and more punchy than the Fender by itself (and obviously with much more gain), but not so woofy on the low end as a big 4x12 closed back cabinet.  I definitely find myself breaking into Stadium rock anthems without really thinking about it.
