We had some REALLY bad weather here in East Tennessee last night (lots of tornados)... my wife told me not to worry because she had taken my Alembics to the basement for safe-keeping!!!
-
isn't the basement the first place to flood? ;-)

Folks from Alabama all the way to West Virginia were dealing with tornadoes yesterday afternoon/evening.
Basement is where it's at when those bad boys roll through town.
-
I live in Birmingham, AL and the damage is just horrible. My wife thought I was crazy putting my basses in the bathroom with her and the dogs, but they are kids too!
-
Glad you and your family are safe Brent.... I know that there are already close to 300 confirmed deaths and the pictures make it look like somebody started dropping bombs on Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.
-
Thanks for the kind words, Toby. www.al.com (http://www.al.com) has a lot of pictures of the devastation. At one point around 6pm Central, we had metal siding and roofing falling in our yard. We learned shortly after that it was debris from Tuscaloosa. Very scary. My neighbor found a 5 x 8 picture frame of someone's daughter in their front yard this morning. Things like that give me the chills.

My sincere Concerns & Prayers for all of you in the effected areas .

I was living in Birmingham when the 1998 F5 hit. Some friends knew that I used to do construction work and asked me to go out to the hardest hit area to try and do some patch work on the houses that were left standing. Let me assure you that the pictures from the scene in NO way conveyed the TOTAL devastation that I witnessed. It was very humbling to stand in one house where everyone survived and look across the yard to where another house once stood and know that 2 people were not so fortunate.
-
We're only about an hour from St. Louis. We experienced some golf ball size hail from the same cell that destroyed Lambert airport, but thankfully no real damage. My sympathies go out to those who have experienced hardships.
-
My prayers go out to everyone affected. I hadn't realised just how bad this has been for you all. If I had, I certainly wouldn't have tried to be funny in my earlier post.

Thank God you or your Alembics were not hurt! It's great that your wife understands the importance of your babies!
-
I second what Jacko said (from another Scottish member)
Hope things start to improve .
The whole world seems to be dying at the moment!!!

After a tornado touched down on the other side of the mountain from us (Middletown MD), my wife reminded my to call the insurance agent and add my Alembic to the bass policy. You would think after waiting all these years for one I would not need reminding.
Prayers all around for those affected by the latest round of Mother's fury.

I see on your profile that you have a current band, Edward; check with your insurer - most home-owner's policies will not cover an instrument if it ever leaves the the house for pay. You may need an ax-specific policy (people around the board say good things about Heritage, IIRC).

Thanks for the heads up, Peter. I never thought of it in that light. Sadly, I started in '86 and only in the last few years have I even held insurance on my basses. Back then it was more about just finding a flop and some food, usually at a GF's place, and my Fender P and Peavey amp stayed in the van. While this is my first Alembic partnership (I would never dane to use the word 'owned'), I have several vintage Leo Fender era G&L's (SR# B000833 is getting a re-fret) and they are impossible to replace.
-
I just got a policy on my Alembic & they had to classify me a a professional musician even though it is not my primary job. I do play for money & didn't want to take a chance of them denying a claim if I didn't go with a pro policy. It is for full replacement value at factory list price even though I did not pay list, & it is only $82/year. It is a Personal Articles polict through State Farm.
-
I'm in the process of obtaining a policy from Heritage. The cost is $.50 per $100 value. I'll be insured for just about everything except war, terrorism, and theft from an unlocked car. And they understand instruments.

Bill, The Theft from an unlocked car clause concerns me; in that, one can gain entry to many electronically controlled car locking mechanisms these days with out any trace of forced entry. A thief could watch you load your vehicle from a distance and wait for the moment you walk away for a few minutes and then strike and open your locked car, IN such a case could the insurance company claim that you left your car unlocked ? It could be your word against theirs . Is there any legal language to protect you from an insurance company in such a case ? I am really interested how this would go through the courts should there be litigation . My wife recently had her purse stolen in such a way out of the trunk.
-
I'd be very leery of the personal articles policies. I had one of those before I moved over to Heritage and had a minor claim. They paid it but said they wouldn't cover anything else because I play for cash outside the home. It was State Farm. I have probably the same policy as Bill and it's very reasonable. I pay around $300/year for over $80k worth of insurance. No claims so far!
-
I am still concerned about the Theft from an unlocked car clause. It seems to me that could be a point of dispute between the insured party and the insurance company , as per the conditions that I out lined in my post #1799. Is there a Lawyer reading this that can chime in on this ? Even better have there been any any precedent cases yet ? I think this is an important issue because of prior events that I have heard about and experienced where insurance companies use arguments such as this to avoid having to make a pay out. Lawyers please chime in, we have a few on this fine forum.

Edwin, that's why I changed my policy to a professional musician policy. Now there can be no dispute that I play for money & it is still covered. There is no unlocked car clause in my policy either.

Here is an example of Keyless Remote Entry

Not the most challenging procedure perhaps.
I am also going to check out Anderson to see how they compare with Heritage .

Here is the Heritage link;

I need to sign up with Heritage, too. Do they require pictures of the instruments? Serial numbers? Can you use stated value or do they have some other way of determining the value of the items?
Thanks in advance.

I've been giving Heritage appraisals of my expensive instruments, which at this point are my Series I and my '67 Starfire that has been modified and also includes signatures of Phil Lesh and Jack Casady.
Serial numbers are also good. I think when it comes down to it, you'll probably need some purchase proof, receipts, etc. I've been insuring at replacement cost, so somewhere between street and MSRP. I had Mica send them a document for my Series I directly, so I think that got insured at list price.
Rusty, it's great you could do that! My State Farm rep refused. They said it was too high risk and would be really pricey.
Another option is Clarion, which I've heard good things about.
-
So Edwin, these appraisals that you give Heritage: did you generate them yourself or did you have to get the instruments appraised by someone else? If by someone else, who would that be? Since I'm in your area I could use the same person.
Most of my instruments have been purchased used, so there are no receipts... Craigslist has been good to me.
(Hmmm... looks like another thread successfully hijacked!)

Back on track as we digress______My Wife agrees it is prudent to protect The Alembic stuff with insurance ; I love my Wife
This thread is now recalibrated and in alignment to topic.

For appraisals I use Woodsong's Lutherie. They give the instrument a good going over and then write out a detailed description with their estimation of value. I forget what they charge, they've usually done it while my instrument has been in for other work. I'm heading there right now to get the Alembic pickups fitted for my Starfire!

Thanks!
Sorry about the hijack, but I don't have a wife... But I do love my financee, and I keep her instruments and mine in a safe spot in the basement, off the ground in case of flooding. (May I be vindicated now?)
-
OK, to put it back on track, I, too, love my wife and she was happy to hear about my new pickups. However, she's in New York at Sniffapalooza, so she'll have to wait until she gets back to experience their butterscotch grooviness.
