Title: BLUE STUFF/DRIVE
Post by: palembic on July 07, 2003, 06:59:25 AM
Ladies and gentle people!
On the 4th of july -when you on the other side of the pond were drinking, setting off firework, congratulate each other how great he is, anyway...- there were 2 members of the ABC coming together when I played live at the Stapleton (Leuven) with our bluesband BLUE STUFF. I was very happy to see Jan Rivi?re live on the bar (and not on screen) and even Steven De prins who is an almost Alembic-player brought me a visit.
To be honest, I WAS DEAD NERVOUS!!!!!
I NEVER have sweaty hands and now ...yuk... the first part of the set it was not me playing.
Well ...the confidence will come over the years ...LOL...when I'll be 68!!!!!!
Anyway ...we had a great time on stage. The second set better than the first.
So next year ...we'll be 4.
The year after that maybe 8???
Everybody is welcome when he feels the urge to hop over once to this side of the pond, 4th of july or not.

I'll take this thread also as an opportunity to tell you al we started a new band DRIVE with a fine lady-singer and 2 talented young guitarists. First gig will be next friday the 11th in Caf? Entreprise again in Leuven at 23.30hrs. As soon as pictures will be available I'll post some!

Well, well, well
Guess who we meet here ;-)

Yep, it was a real pleasure meeting you Paul, although the time to talk was rather limited. I  feel very honoured finally have experienced the series II  in real live.

Bonnie certainly is an incredible bass. As I said Friday, maybe a bit to large for my hands, but it sure sounded very good in your hands. I even think that Steven (as a non Alembic player) was even more blown away of what he saw and heared ;-)

We should do this more often !

By the way, Steven is playing next week in the same pub on Fridays. If you can spare the time, you should definitely check out his funk performance !

Looking forward to see those pics of your new band.

Cheers
Jan

Nou, nou,
it looks like there's something going on. Perhaps we should arrange a special European thread on this site, where al the European bassplayers meet.....
Hope to come over and visit my belgium neighbours sometimes..

Gewoon doen yoh!
ANC and ABC in a meeting!

We'll do this more often! You bet!
About next friday!
I'll try!
We play Caf? Entreprise with our new band DRIVE (pictures will follow) at 23.30hrs.
If Steven is playing in the same time shedule as we did, I can hop over and grab his first set. About Mellow Yellow, I DO loveto see the band. One of the guitarplayers I play with was highly admiring about you all!

I said to my band-mates that you came over (and I was so nervous) to meet.
They said Alembic club...wow ...how many members?
I said about 700 ww.
And in Belgium!
Euh ...3!
Reaction of my band-members: not very succesfull those Alembics!
***sigh***
But they agree on the sound!!!! SUPERQUALIFRAGILISTICEXPEALIDOTIOUS!
And -brothers and sisters- soon is the new  (well euh ..there's a lot of second and third hand involved) rack being installed. And I'll have to start learning tweaking knobs.

Paul the bad one

PS: last friday there was a CALIFORNIAN lady singer in the audience who asked me ...to join her band in the US!!!!!?????????? I think she was too drunk. In my opinion California is LOADED with good bass-players and they don't need me on that side of the pond.

Our Euro brothers seem to be having much fun lately. I need to get over there and have fun too! I know there are many ways and places for fun on the continent.

Paul (tbo)- you will start having even more fun by tweaking knobs. The tonal variations and possibilities are endless. You may have started down the path to a new addiction... Never enough knobs to tweak! Be careful!

Also, you should have gotten too drunk Californian lady singer to pick up the expenses for you to go to California. That way you could have paid a visit to the New England Chapter of Alembicians on the way through!!! Drunken people do silly things sometimes if only you ask them to...

A little report on Friday!    I went to see Steven De Prins and Mo'Groove.  Wow!  Great performance Steven: really funky. You ought to hear this people, Steven plays a Fender Marcus Miller Signature (in await of his EVH or MKS) and is loosing his feet in a nearly wall-to-wall carpet of effect pedals, boards, foot-switches .... .    Alas ...I couldn't stay long because I had another gig myself around the corner.  It was "Drive"'s premiere and well... let say ...euh ... er .... it was good, could be better... but you know ...that's why they invented "rehearsal".  I'll try to post some pictures.  Bonnie (sweet as ever) now backed-up by the F1-X pre-amp, SF-2 not yet.    Paul the bad one    PS: saterday I had another gig with again another (occasion) band. I came home, went to bed ..completely forgetting that they broadcasted on Televesion the Bonnie Raitt performance on the this year Northsea Festival.  AUGH!!!!!! DOH!!!!!

Greeeaaat pictures, Paul and a great bass too ! Judging by the colour of your forehead it must have been a hot event inside there or did you get sunburned ;-) ? I wish I could hear the sound that belongs to the pictures. And wait ... ahh, I can identify your new F-1X. What cabs are you playing here ?

BTW: Your top looks quite similar to mine now. More pictures at www.wernerwitzel.de/band.htm (http://www.wernerwitzel.de/band.htm)

Brother Werner!

Hey ...what happened to the fancy sunglasses?

Warm inside? Yes indeed! OTOH I have a rather tanned skin! And I've lying in the sun that day.

I'm using the Glockenklang cabinets wich I like very much because they are very natural and neutral sounding. SWR and EDEN -which I tried too- are sounding louder because they have -in my humble opinion- a tending to nosy sound = mids. The advantage of that colour is that those sounds are VERY audible and really cuts through everything. The Glocks are neutral and indeed need more power and tweaking on the amp.
The Glocks are:
- Quattro 4x10 with horn (800w 8ohms)
- Uno 1 x 15 (300w 8 ohms)

The rack is for the moment:
- F1-X (with my thanks for the scheme you gave to change the power, as you can see I play without blowing it ..well ...powerwise) put in Bi-amping.
- the DS5-R powers supply for Bonnie
- The Dynacord L-1000 Poweramp in Stereo

Later when my 8 HE rack arrives there will be added:
- Lexicon MPX 100 effects
- Korg DT1 pro tuner
- Alembic SF-2
- American Audio PDP 900 rack-light and power conditioner.

As you surely understand I'm rather proud of this set-up!

Hi Paul,

Jees' I'm getting old man. Sometimes I need to see what I am playing, then I'm taking out my normal glasses. But sometimes I don't need to see what I'm doing and I can wear my cool dude Stevie-Wonder-Tribute-Glasses. Get's me 5 years age-down credite for the girls at least ;-).

Paul, your rack is a killer even right now. Can't wait to see more pictures when you are uprading. I am pleased to hear that the F-1X mains change worked out well.

BTW: My band will do an unplugged (amplified but without drums) Gig at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September to present our new CD. I think its going to be the 12th. I will post it here as soon I know time, booth and other details. Stay tuned to my website www.wernerwitzel.de (http://www.wernerwitzel.de) in the meantime. I added some other MP3s and photos (history ;-) on sunday.

Hey Paul!

The pics look good Bonnie looks in good health, as I'm sure you take very good care of her. One thing I noticed, though, is that the toilet sign is pointing at you and you have a(how do I put this..)rather different expression....like you were holding it until the end of the set.lol

Anyway, it is good to see the pics. Keep them coming!

Can someone tell me where I can get an Alembic pre-amp for a good price in Euroland?

The place where I would go to is the Bass Connection in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Edwin, the owner, is also an Alembic addept, and he can tell (and sell) you all about Alembic preamps, filters and second-hand motorbikes ; )
No really, he is a very good guy to talk to. His number: 0031 - 35 628 19 04.

Eugen,
to be honest: a F1-X is the most rare thing to find on this side of the pond. Really ... I can know!
I the end Brother Harold sold me his F1-X from the US (where they appaer more frequently (although...)), the 110v/220v switch was extremely easy to make even for a non-tech-dude as I am.

Paul, what does BONNIE sound like with the Glockenlang 4x10 (top) 1x15 (bottom) setup. I read in your post that you used EDEN before the Glocks. What exactly didn't you like about the EDEN, and were they the same setup? (4x10 & 1x15)
Title: Re: BLUE STUFF/DRIVE

Hi Brian,

nice to hear from you!
You inspird me in assembling my rig and I'm getting close now: only the rack-light/power distributor is missing and will -alas- not be installed before november. For that reason the SF-2, tuner and Lexicon are not installed yet.
About the Glocks.
My first speakers were a 2x10 w/horn Alumabass (Bullfrog) and a Mesaboogie 15. Unfortunately there was a OHM-difference between those 2 so I sold them.
With Edwin (EVH) I did an A/B/C check on different speakers. I checked 4x10 inches with horn from Eden, SWR, Epifani and Glockenklang with the same amp. On that moment all US material was extremely expensive due to exchange rates.
On sound I found -it's purely personal- that SWR and Eden had a very nosy / nasal sound. That makes sense because those sound-colour makes the bass very penetrating through a wall of guitars f.i. That results in SWR and Eden as being very economical on transmitting power into loud sounding.
Although the sound IS coloured (the Eden in my opinion more than the SWR).
Epifani and Glockenklang were clean. It's not a nice word. They were like blanco pages. They sound neutral.
Epifani was a lot more expensive than Glockenklang.
So ...
I didn't try Acme's or Ampeg or EA or ... whatsoever ... .
I remember Brother Mikey (Michael Paskel) who tried the Glockenklangs at the New-York dealer.
He was knocked out ...alas also by the price you got to pay in the US.
Conclusion: Bonnie sounded extremely clear.

Hey Paul,

I noticed you missed the Bonnie Raitt concert. Have a close look at www.omroep.nl/nps/jazz (http://www.omroep.nl/nps/jazz) every month. It is possible that they are going to broadcast the Bonnie Raitt North Sea Jazz festival 2003 this year. If you are not able to watch it or to tape it, let me know and I'll tape it for you. ok? Just drop me a line.

I get teh same remarks from my (grown up) children. They ask ...dad ...why do you makes those faces when you play.
Thruth ...I can't help it. playing Bonnie is not painful for me AT ALL (even if there are people who have to chase the entire room behind the neck to reach the low C). It has to do with the music I'm playing that I like. There was once a man in the audience who came to see me in a break and said : It's amazing: you seem to fly when you play and loosing every contact with the earth.
huh ...I gues that's why I play out of tune sometimes. LOL

Thanks Dave. I'll give a yell to Yoeri (the big guitarist with the small guitar).

Michael no offence taken. I think we'll kind of related, the closing of the eyes when playing is not the only thing we have in common. We both have a great taste for basses, I really love yours (really gang you ought to see Groovelines profile!!!). I like the JB! I just took one over from a friend. Well ...a Squier FJB-copy for 100$. Played as a broom and sound worse (as that broom). I messed with the thing through the brother Joey routine and now she plays as a woman's leg but she still sounds as the broom ...well ... you can't get it all for THAT price no????
Even more: you are a video producer? Hehe ...like wise!
AVID-off-line was the highest I could go in editing. I was writing and directing stuff. Have always been a gofer: director, photographer, scriptwriter, communication consultant, cook, musician ... well ...what do you want ... I'm Gemini in atrology! There are about 5 Paul's into me. Always fun when those dudes start telling jokes to each other, not so fun when they have a fight .

Paul,

Thanks for the kind words, it's a dream to play. Now if I could only find a way to own a neck through with anniversary electronics....It was hard to part with the Jazz, but without it's sacrifice the Orion would belong to another lucky soul, although I doubt they'd be as greatful.
Never did the Avid thing (lucky you) - for a long time we were exclusively a MAC shop, that meant using MEDIA 100. Seems you do everything in this profession. No matter how exclusive you might think your position is, you still find yourself with a roll of gaff tape in one hand and tough spun in the other while pulling cables with your teeth behind an equipment rack . Great work when you can get it.
Gemini? That explains why you see both sides of every discussion; and aren't too shy about it either. LOL Related to cooking... If I had to do it over agian I'd be a chef. Also, did you not at one point mention that your family is somehow connected to a vineyard(owns?)? If so, do you export to the US? The only Lindeman(n)s I can find is from Australia...

Ha ...another cook in the house.
Ahllala brother Bob will like this!

Media 100 ... well I directed an editer once on that machine. I know it only from the first versions. And well AVID I only was used to the first versions of that too. But  -if I may say so- I was a fairly good editer.

LOL Gaffa ...here we having this saying: what's the most important thing that really holds the crew together??
GAFFA!!!

About whine.
Hum .... this is gonna be one of those really long good'ol Paul-the-bad-one-stories HA!
The wine you mentioned is originally from a famiy named Lindeman. I think he was from the UK but therefor German based. The name on the bottel was Lindeman's wine. Later it became Lindemans Wine.
We're not related.
HOWEVER ....however!
The misunderstanding could be from the fact that part of my family are beer-brewers near Brussels. The make Geuze, Lambik, Kriek, Framboise and Peaches beer. Now THAT beer IS exported to the US. Far too sweet for my tooth but it seems that you Americans like it!
It could be that you heard the story about the birth-week of Bonnie. I mean: when I received her back in 1996 I went for a short holiday to friends in France in the Beaune-Burgundy region. We were invited by our friends (winemakers) to help plant a new vineyard, something seldom done in that Burgundy region. I nicknamed the vineyard  Clos Alembic. It's quite a good wine: a 1re Cru.
My daughter took a picture of me (look at that youngster) with Bonnie: the first time we met, on the border of that vineyard.
aaaaah-lalla ...those memories.

Just reporting: we had a hell off a good gig last saturday in Tervuren with Blue Stuff. I'm really working on Tweak Peaks now and slowly I'm getting somewhere.

This I'll play with DRIVE (with the fine young lady) at Aarschot in bar TIME OUT near the railway-station. They are veru nice people there but it's not a very comfortable place to play. The funny thing is every that everybody who wants to go to the toilet needs to cross the stage. Can you imagine ...in a BAR ...***sigh*** ...the Fillmore East is VERY far away in those situations!!!

As promised: new gigs coming for BLUE STUFF and DRIVE.

BLUE STUFF is doing calm now. We are keeping this really blues profile going and public in BElgium for that is not s??? wide. We had a concert in prison planned but due to misunderstanding it is postponed. So my stay in jail will be later this year HA!
However we play in a walloon blues-temple Au Petit Tonneau Rue de la Haniche in Acosse close to Huy. 15th of may at 22hrs.

You now DRIVE, it's more rock oriented in the blues. We get busy:

Friday 13 febr. 23:00h (today) Kit' sRhythm & Blues Caf? Grote markt 50 Antwerp

Friday 5th March Caf? ZOO in Geel.St. Dymphnaplace 12 Starting 22:00hrs.

Friday 30th april  Aarschot Caf? Time Out (front of railway station) starting 22:00h.

Me, Bonnie, Tweak Peaks ...we'll be there ...so hop on a plane and ...well ...huh

The gig yesterday.
Well ...what can I say?

Brothers and sisters I didn't notice it at first but ...it was Friday the 13th!!!
First it was already stressy: being a one year band and to play at one of the top Rhythm & Blues temples in Belgium.
Second: at 10hrs in the morning we got a phone call: 1 of our guitarplayers (the one with the hat in the picture) called in sic (heavy flu). Ok ...we decided to go.

Oh man ...we discovered the hard way why we are 5. 1/3th of the number intro's were normally played by our poor friend so the other player was dead-nervous and ...yeah ...we all were. So actually there was NO number we managed to play to our standards.
Beware, there were absolutely highlights: Iris -our lady singer- give all of herself in breathtaking versions of I'm a woman, Who is she and Rock me baby.
But ...we all felt the same: something is missing in here.
I managed -as rooky SF-2 user- to create a sound that was broad enough for a 3 players set-up with still that needed edge.
But ...I'm NOT Jack Bruce or Tim Bogert (BTW: thanks DIno for the Cactus CD's ...it's really VERY inspiring) ...yet!!!
(Just you wait until I'm grown-up LOL).

Third: the place was loaded! It's the first time we got the reaction he guys ...you can play louder (!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!).
Suddenly we realise that the sound in the bar was dropping dead after let say 4 meters from the podium because of the acoustic material used in the interior design (the bar is a long tunnel). We heard afterwards that in that place everybody plays with a FULL PA-system (We only send the voice through the PA and some bass-drum, not all the instruments. Why ...simple ... we can't afford such a PA) So ...our sound didn't reach the end of the bar.

Well ...shit happens I guess. Friday the 13th? Tell me about it!

Thanks for supporting us and especially to Sam for his kind words.

Paul; so you're saying that one of the top Rhythm & Blues temples in Belgium
doesn't have a house system?

Well brothers,

R & B temple ...well ...this is Belgium. If you use a magnifier on your daughters world atlas you maybe find the place squeezed between France and Holland. It's a question of scale. The place is realtively large and they HAVE a own system but ...we didn't thought we needed it. We are so used to use our own stuff that by far meets the most teeny-weeny bars we're playing in (me hidden between the ladies&men's room doors).
It was just a thing of learning and being confronted with a (for us) never heard of situation.
Well ...that's what playing live is all about.
Anyway ...it was a valuable experience and I really appreiated your reaction to my sharingf of this. There are not much people I can do this with.

PS: Tweak Peaks was directed in the longitudinal axe of the bar. The guitar was behind the corner. It seems they got a present and good sounding bass! HA!

Okay, try this: my birthday is the 16th, my younger brother's is the 16th, albeit one year apart and we're named Mike and Pat. If we were catholic, I'd bet we'd bleed green.....

Hollis, Happy Birthday!

So Paul, as a teensy request for Hollis and meself, do you think you could be a good lad and celebrate with us by laying down a wee bit of a solo while we're in our pints? I can't think of a better venue than a pub named Blarney's and on blessed Saint Paddy's Day yet.

I can.  Club Chronadh na Gaeilge in Dublin.  Orders at the bar are only taken in Irish.

Paul, you and the band have a round of porter for me.  I'd love to join you there if it were possible.  St. Pat's day will be a little blue this year anyway since I'm not supposed to drink anymore.

Brother Sam ...we all got a Kilkenny on the bahalf of the Irish and of all the Irish members of this club.
It was a GREAT gig!
Still fighting the (light) hum in Tweak Peaks. Well ...I have a Powersupply+racklight 1HE element in my rack. It indicates the voltages. We started playing at 223V (the F1-X is set on 220V) by the ebd of the evening we had 243V!!!! And I definitely had the hum.
Maybe it is due to that too.
Anyway ...nothing to worry about now. Guys it was REALLY cool! The band as thight playing as our Iris' jeans!

Sam-sam-sam ...
you'd got to be there.
Man-man-man ...what a GIG ...it was HUGE!
We were as tight as our singers jeans!!!
Maybe a little too tight, my brother warned too get loose a little. Playing music -and certainly the blues- is about NOT playing. So it is more important choosing the notes you don't play instread of those you play.

Well pioctures will follow (Bartender ...a round of beer for that table in the corner before they start banging ...put it on  ...oh ...huh Mica's tab LOL).

GREAT NEWS!

Where are the Harley and motor ALembicians?
This sunday (Eastern) BLUE STUFF plays at the Caf? ZOO, St- dymphnaplein in GEEL at 19:00hrs at the occasion of a motor meeting.
It's gonna be great ...I hope!
Okay ...who is in the neighborhood?? Brother David the LOud one? Brother Jonathan??? The Paul's Brigade???

PICTURES-PICTURES-PICTURES!!!!
Sounds like you guys were so tight you squeeked when you walked.  I think you're to happy to play the blues.  I've been practicing up for you.  You should send me a song list so I can learn something we'll all know.  Hey, if I come play with Drive do I get to wear the striped hat?

So it is more important choosing the notes you don't play instead of those you play.  Rarely has a wiser statement been made. Disipline is the key to that.

What type of motor meeting is happening?  We like to go down to the annual Cavallino Classic Ferrari meet in Palm Beach.  Of course we're outside looking in.

The gig at the ZOO with BLUE STUFF was ok too. Only ...the bar owner made a mistake in bookin hours. Th motor-drivers were there between 14:00 and 18:00. We were there at 19:00 ...oooooops.
The people who stayed LOVED it!!!!

Hi brothers and sisters,
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/65124/9916.jpg)
we had a GREAT gig last friday evening at the "Time Out" bar in Aarschot. Here are some pictures.
People really liked our playing. We heard that evening that our friend the bar owner has an agressive brain-tumor. He was already in surgery but it hit him again immediately. He said: "Com'on guy's on monday I'm going back to hospital for medical treatment. This is something I wanted to be here for. After monday ..." he didn't finished his sentence. We had the feeling to say goodbye to him while playing ... man ... we PLAYED!!!!!!!

Brother Adriaan,

that bar was ...well ...weird!
There were 25 people I guess and one of them really went completely beserk hearing us play.
After that we played there with DRIVE and there were ...about 15 people.
We tought ...sigh ...oh well ...just another of those unlikely evenings but ...after the show the boss cam to see us and invited us to play the Acosse Blues Festival in March 2005. I think we'll be the opener but ...what the heck ...we ARE there and the festival is well know in Walloon country!!!
