I had the opportunity to take Marilyn out for 2 evenings this weekend. We did 2 gigs with my coverband at the Belgian coast, one on Friday in Middelkerke, and one on Saturday in Gistel. The pics are from the last gig yesterday in Gistel. It was a special night, because we did a Marvin Gaye Tribute concert which was a lot of work to prepare. On normal gigs we play with 5 musicians (1 vocal, 1 bass, 1 guitar, 1 drum, 1 keyboard/sax/backing vocal). For this occasion, we hired everyone we needed: an extra 4 horns, 2 backing vocalists, and 1 percussion. It was fun to play a complete set with Marvin Gaye songs. I really enjoyed the smooth songs. The night was also special, because we had a popular young and new Belgian vocalist called Brahim who joined us for a couple of songs at the end of the evening. I just feel a little guilty that my other 2 Alembics stay at home a lot since the arrival of Marilyn last year .... Cheers Jan

Geweldig Janneke!!!!
It must be great to be part of such a band and do those Marvin Gay numbers.
For those on the club who didn't know and why they make that fuzz about Marvin Gaye on the Belgian coast: he lived for a long time in Oostende (=Belgian coast) and refound there the strenght to write and record new songs. The smashhit sexual healing was writte Oostende, maybe even recorded there for the first time. I'm not sure about that!
Jannek ...and the SF-2 maatje?????
Paul the bad one
PS1: I didn't rebuild my rig yet so I still have the slight hum. The Stringswing works perfectly and is VERY handy (pictures will follow) and the cable is working allright!
Thanks brother!!!
PS2: Brahim is a great guy!
-
this is a cool idea i dont play live every weew though but everytime i play live from now on i will have someone take photos and i will give an account of how it went
-
Paul, the superfilter is arriving this week.
So I know what to do the next couple of days/weeks/months ....
Glad to hear you like the hangers and that the extra cable are ok !
Ok, where are all those live pics now
or did you all rehearse at home this weekend ?
Peace
Jan

I'm playing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway tomorrow.I'll post pics when available.

Oh man Dave,
I'm jealous. It is that time of year now isn't it?
My best to you, Kenny and the crew!!!
Dino
-
Yes Dino,it is.Thanks.We had a great carb day playing in front of 10,000+ and best of all,Kenny had a blast. And I had the great pleasure to attend a classic 500 mile race thanks to the good people from Pioneer. We are scheduled to play at 5 or 6 IRL races this Summer and Fall and I'll keep everybody posted as to where.Sorry.No pics from carb day yet as Team Rahal/Letterman are a little busy right now with they're newest and first 500 winner Buddy Rice but when the team's P.R. man gets a little time to get them to me on disk,I'll be sure to post them. The purpleheart Rogue 5 was a joy to play that day by the way.

It was a fun night. We were supposed to play outside, but the weather was very threatening. Not much seating in the bar area but the show seemed to go well. Once again ,thanks to Bill and Nancy for coming down. Mike
-
Hey everybody in the Kansas City area. The Indy Racing League circus is pulling into town this weekend and the Kenny Brack band will be playing on the 3rd courtesy of the good people from Argent.Hope to see some club members there and happy fourth of July to everyone.Go team Rahal/Letterman.

Hi Brothers and sisters, we played with DRIVE Friday evening 2 weeks ago. On a kind of "Braderie" (kind of street-festival) in BIerbeek. Some pictures!

Everything was there: We had the vibes, the groove and the mood! We had the lights!!! We had a fan-tas-tic PA!!! We had a GREAT time! There was only ...oh ...uhuuh ...eeny-teeny-weeny problem!!! We had an audience of 16 adults (8 of them were waiters) and 35 playing children. ***sigh*** ...showbizz Paul the bad one PS...hep ...Brother Michael ...did you see?? Isn't Bonnie looking great with Red??? (yeah ...me too but that's the lighting on my ...oh ...huhuh ..."thinning" grey millimeter hair LOL)

I WAS admiring that Red cable! It looks good on you...Michael

The Greg Morrison Band opening for Rain, the premier Beatles cover band in the world, 7/4/04 Monterey, CA. Not taken by a professional. Great gig, we sounded good to my ear. However, after seeing Rain, I saw the benefit of doing this full time as opposed to now and then!

Hey Paul,
What thinning hair? From your April 19th posting to your July 4th one, it appears you have shaved your head clean...very nice look. That's the way I do it.

Hey Brother MIkey,
no ...not bald-shaven.
But due toi the fact that my hair is becoming whiter and whiter (and I'm becoming more sexy LOL) the reflection of the lamps suggest that I am completely bald.

Here is a link to see shots of our performance on Carb Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Kenny Brack. In one shot you can see Brian Herta from team Andretti/Green singing with us.
-
Dave, I could not get this link, or the link you posted in your Rogue thread, to work. They both came back with a message from Yahoo saying the file is inaccessible.
-
This is from our July 10th gig at The Boat Bar in Ortonville, Michigan. Don't know for sure what I was laughing at. Probably our keyboard player and vocalist launching into Hounddog as we were setting up for our 3rd set. That or our vocalist chatting up the crowd.

More pictures (action shots, I hope) as they get posted to our website. Please feel free to visit. www.funkeestation.com (http://www.funkeestation.com)

Dave,
Same result for me. I tried backing out to your main photo page and couldn't find a directory listing for you photo albums. I'd really like to see the Rouge in action.
ps - glad to know that Kenny's up and around.

Why is everything so difficult?sigh.I'll see if I can figure out whats wrong.I can get into it fine.Sorry folks.I'll keep trying.

Try this and see if it works.I hope.
-
Dave; it worked a little better in that I got to a page that said smokind1's photos; but there were no actual pictures there.
-
I give up.I've run out of patience and options. The only reason I did it through yahoo is because I saw another club member do the same with pics of his Alembic.Sorry good club members.
-
Dave,
Just post the pics directly to this site. If you were able to post from your hard drive to Yahoo, you should be able to post directly from your hard drive to here.
All....you GOTTA check out our website. www.funkeestation.com (http://www.funkeestation.com) Go to the song list and view the Quicktime movie of The Way It Is. Dancers. That's the only clue I'm gonna give ya. Dancers. Nuff said.

John (811952),
Are there any other pics of your bass?
Another angle of your band showing your bass?
Darrell
-
Paul (palembic),
What's in your rig? Do you have a description of it elsewhere in the topics?
Darrell
-
i have several in my photo albums i just have to dig up a good close-up of it.as far as my rig i'm running two BAG_END cabs each containing a 15 inch JBL woofers ,i really dig 15's over four 10s,mainly because there's more punch in a 15 & a wider tonal capacity in bigger drivers, and theyre powered by a randall RB1000 (300watt RMS)amp however i'm in the market for another more versatile amp and my JBL's are wired @ 4OHM's each as apposed to traditional 8 OHMs per cab.

Brother Darell,

BTW ...the bro's and sis' know my rig as Tweak Peaks
PTBO
-
keavin,
Yeah man, those posts were for you as well, thanks for the info. Sounds like you put out some serious low freq with your rig. I haven't ran 15 woofs since the black widows came out.
I may have to integrate at least one 15 to go with my 4x10 goliath. Let me know what amp you decide on.
Peace,
Darrell
-
Darrell,
I sent my brother an email asking if he has any pictures of me playing it anywhere. For a family full of professional artists, musicians and photographers, we don't seem to take very many pictures when we're not *working*! I need to suck it up and ask somebody to shoot some at my next gig (on the 15th I think).
Keavin,
A bass-thumpin' friend of mine would characterize that picture as gettin' funky on the E.. It looks like you're having an awesome time..
John

I found these from a couple of outdoor gigs this past fall, including the aforepictured steel drum thing...

Neither of them really shows the lovely cocobolo at all, but such is life I suppose... John
-
John,
That's more like it. I especially like the top pic, it has an artistic, sketch-like interpretation of an Alembicist in action. I can imagine what brilliance your bass' wood has, it's another beautiful legend.
Thanks,
Darrell
-
Darrell,
Thanks for the kind words. My daughter took the pictures, and I can only guess that a brief flash of light caught the bass at just the right angle to make it pop out like that while everything else blurred. She didn't have the patience to figure out how to work my camera in the dark. Serendipity...
John
-
John,
Your daughter should have the top picture enlarged to 11 x 14 and transferred to canvass, get a custom frame to compliment the colors and make it a portrait.
Darrell
-
Darrell,
I would love that. I think she would too. Thanks for the idea.
John

Ah, good old #12! Keavin, you always look like you're having such a great time - I guess that's the Alembic effect :-)
Does #12 have an LED down by the XLR socket? Or is the LED on your cord? Or is it just a trick of the light? (cue John Entwistle . . .)
Nice hat, by the way!
Keep thumpin',
K.
-
I wish, it's just the flash, but actually those are series II electronics in a s/I body & no LEDS, BUT that's an old pic ,i just like to give the impression that im still gigging LOL,.like mica says dont be shy share those pics!
-
actually all i do now is ride my horses through the las vegas desert alot until the gigs pick up again.
-
Ah, I see, riding horses through the desert, hence the cowboy hat!
Man, I'm envious, it sounds idyllic - I'm stuck here in rainy and cold London UK, wishing I could catch even a glimpse of a desert. Or a horse, for that matter. Dirty grey city blocks all around. Bleurgh.
I'm sure the gigs will pick up again for you soon - just think of the downtime as more time to practise!

www.noahgabriel.com (http://www.noahgabriel.com)
have a safe trip.
Mike
-
I'm looking @ your bass,i see rogue electronics with jazz pups?,,,but this is different your pups are very close together, cool set up!
-
Yeah Keav, the original owner did a lot of slapping & Alembic suggested moving the front pup back a bit.... Europa electronics w/ dual J-pups~ a good cross-over bass for all the Fender / Sadowsky fans...
-
As I mentioned in an earlier post, we played The Boat Bar in Ortonville, Michigan again last night. A good time was had by all. One guy won $12K playing Keno. A friend of our drummer won $50K!!!
My favorite pieces last night were.....
Take Me To The River - Al Green
You Can Leave Your Hat On - Joe Cocker
Play That Funky Music / Superstition Medley
Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder
Them Changes - Jimi Hendrix & Band of Gypsies
The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby
Skin Tight / Brickhouse Medley
On The Way It Is, we feature our keyboard player, but I also get to take two solos . The first one I just pretty much funk out on the basic bassline. That always goes well. Last night in the 2nd one I went to a higher register riff and TOTALLY lost my timing and had to find my way back to the earlier funked out E / A / C /D bassline .
I played my Alembic 5 string most of the night, but I always play my Hanewinckel fretless when we do Them Changes. It's got some really fast trills and I prefer to do them without speed bumps. I also tend to use the fretless when we do Shaft, since we tend to do those back to back. When we work What's Goin' On and Heard It Through The Grapevine into our set I'll probably use the fretless for those, too.
We play the Boat Bar again on the 23rd. I may park the Alembic and give the Marchlewski a full test drive that night. We play an outdoor street fair on the 24th. I'm sure I'll fly with the Alembic again. Nothing like having that steady crutch to lean on.
If you go to our website, you can view some Quicktime clips of The Way It Is, Hounddog (not really part of our set list, but our keyboard player and singer just started into it and it went) , Play That Funky Music, and Taxman. Taxman was from our first time playing The Boat Bar in June. The sound on that clip truly sucks.
As I said, a good time was had by all.
Peace,
James

James; that sure is a pretty bass in those videos. And the tone comes through nicely in the Funky Music clip. And I guess the dancers in the Just the Way It Is video are a testimony to just how moving an experience seeing your band live must be!
-
Brother James, I enjoyed the video's and clips too!! When I'll be a grown up I'll learn to solo too!!!! The pictures here are from the DRIVE-gig last week Monday during the "Nike Run" in Tessenderlo. Not a very comfortable playing situation on a truck carrier. As soon that somebody moved the truck start rocking back and forward ...it really made you see-sick. GIven the fact that our music is "moving" ...oh ...euh ....that's not the way to put this but well ...you understand. Paul TBO

-
Paul, that's a sinister image! Looks like you're in some kind of dark metal band with everyone in the audience headbanging their brains out! To many people Alembics have that gothic look anyway, I have had several similar comments about mine. But the audience must have something nice to look at, wouldn't you agree? So where's the pretty girl singer in the voluptuous (sp?) ballroom dress?
;-)

Dave, if you haven't already seen it, the following is posted in the gallery section. Note a 150K maximum file size is allowed .. If your file is too large, try setting the resolution in the source file to 72 dpi and confine the longest edge to about 800 pixels.
The picture you posted is about 40K, so apparently you reduced it more than needed.
Hope that helps.

hehehe ...about 1000 people round a fire ...neat!!!
-
Wow, Brother Paul, I'm a better bass player than I am a storyteller but here it goes. I showed up at the club feeling fine that evening and ready to play. As I was setting up, the drummer looks over to me and asks if I'm okay. I told him I was feeling okay why was he asking? He said I was pale as a ghost. In about 10 minutes or so, I started sweating, feeling dizzy, headache, cold chills (hence the hat) everything!!! I had a hard time standing and keeping my eyes open. They were ready to call a sub to come for me or worse, cancel the show. I told them, just prop me up on a stool and if I pass out, just call an ambulance...after the gig of course. Then about half way through the gig, it was like someone turned a switch on and it all went away. I felt great!!! No there was no alcohol or anything else involved either. To this day, I have no idea what it was. I went to my doctor the next day and told him what happened. They ran a bunch of tests and found nothing. He feels it might have been a touch of food poisoning. Anyway, here are a couple of pix from that gig. Maybe this is why I started to feel better

Dino - I need to start playing these same clubs with the girls kissing each other. Where do I sign up?
Here's a photo of me at Wholapalooza Convention in LA August 8. I'm wearing a vest originally owned by JE that was loaned by a fan. You can also make out the Boris necklace (hey, I'm striving for details here!). This was the day before My Wife got whacked! HA!!!!
Brother Mike, you need to come out to Boston. You know, they say it's not much of a college town!?!?!? Hey is that Molly Malones? I remember playing that place when the stage was in the old bar area. I was just there a few months ago watching my friend play. I couldn't believe the addition to the place.
Brother Keavin, I don't know man. I've done a lot of ah... experimenting shall we say. I still say nothing compares to a great audience. Well maybe riding my Harley full out up the NH/ME coastline but that's another story.
Brother Paul, Yes you need to come to Boston too!!! Enough lawn mowing, that season is over!!!!
-
What bar is that Dino??? l think I recognize some faces in that first aud pic...
-
Dino,
$20 to you! Yes that is Molly Malone's! Last time I played there before this show was on the crap small stage as well. Glad for the change!
Would love to come to Boston. Would love to go to Toronto. And New York. And London. And wherever else there's interest. Sadly, as John Lennon famously said, We need money first.

Hey Mike,
Ain't it the truth huh? Well I will always keep my ears open for anyone in need of a great Who Tribute band here.
Mike Pace - It's very possible that you recognize some of the faces. That gig was at The Old Court in downtown Lowell.
-
Dino,
I'm told there is quite a bit of interest in a Who tribute in Boston. However, that market seems to be locked up by (and much more accessible to) Who's Next.
All these markets are 2005 initiatives for The Who Show....we'll find a way to get to points east somehow.

Hey Mike,
Let me know if there's anything I might do to help!!!
Peace,
Dino

I couldnt figure that one out Dean~ The purple curtain should've given it away. I also have never seen the upstairs of that place so packed!!
-
It's like that every Thursday when Capt Morgan and the RumRunners are there. I'm sitting in with them again tonight. It should be cool seeing there's no debate or Red Sox/Yankees game tonight.
I'll try to post some pix tonight.
Peace,
Dino

Is the PA up there still some Mackie speakers on sticks?!?
-
Well Carl brings his own PA in now which is two Mackies with a powered sub.

Waiting for the next set!(http://club.alembic.com/Images/65124/13408.jpg)

the great ROCCO PRESTIA after the TOWER OF POWER show, dude is the funkiest bass player on four strings!(http://club.alembic.com/Images/65124/13411.jpg)
-
Great shot, Keavin!
Rocco is way too hip in the pocket to stay down. I'm glad to see he's back out after the health issues from a year or two ago.
You know this riff ... If you love music enough, you play until you can't do it anymore.

Hey Guys
Me at a private affair in San Francisco!

Mmmmm Rory ...really beautiful KS 6...mean it!!! Played one once for some hours and it really shines.

I really enjoy playing this bass. It is kind of mellow, limited in range, heavy but a nice playing instrument. I can't wait for my Alembic 6 string to arrive for a head to head comparison. By the way I hate standing and playing but more so I hate wearing a jacket and playing even more! Nice gig though, will keep me in strings for quite sometime.

Me at work, holding down the lows and mids with my steel drum gig...

-
what kinda music are you guys jamming? what ever it is it's got to be funky!
-
Reggae and Calypso, mostly. Sambas make their way into it as well, as does the occasional bebop, depending upon how we feel. Steel drums are a blast to accompany, and the gig is laid-back enough to give us all quite a bit of freedom to play it how we feel it. Sometimes, though, it's simply all I can do to keep up with the changes. ;) The steel drum players are incredible, and sometimes we use a conga player who sings instead of a set player. It doesn't seem to matter what we play, because steel drums *always* sound Carribean to the crowd! The best thing is that the least I've made with these folks has been $100 for a two-hour gig. Any longer than that and it's $100 per hour per person additional. It keeps me in goat feed...

For these...

Cool those goats. BTW: I read you're from Terr Haute in Indiana. It really strikes me how many Franch names are pupping up in US.
Rory ....next time: pass the gig to me! I love playing standing and wearing a jacket while playing (I mostly do) ...mmmmmm ...oh ...huh ...now about that playing ...I'll learn to I promise!!! Really!!!
Paul the bad one
-
Paul,
It's amazing how quickly people here in the midwest USA forget that most of us are 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants. Everybody had to come from somewhere, right? One of these days I'll make it back to Belgium and share a beer or three with you and Bonnie, and we can chat about video post-production and Alembic basses...
John
-
Yoooooooooohoooooooo!
And one (1) american coming this way!
Ok ...I'll reserve a bass too and a gig.
Blues ...in C sharp???
PTBO
-
Paul,
C sharp works for me! I can effectively destroy pretty much ANY key, especially if there are beer and pictures involved!
John
-
Oh ...I am really GOOD at destroying keys!
And if I add a bit of Brother Paul's the fake one's (tafkad) book Odd meter I can play it in such a way nobody knows what we are doing anymore halfway the tune!!!
Kiddin ....well hehehehe kind off.
Paul the bad one
-
Paul; I don't see sharp at all but I can be flat as day old beer.
-
Hehehehehehe ...I have to remind that one!
PTBO

My preference is to begin in A tonal and modulate to D molished...
-
I'm usually just squeeking by in D minus.
-
What's a key? Does that have anything to do with the squiggly thing at the beginning of a row?
-
Not sure, but if you're in the wrong one I hear it can cause quite a row with the rest of the band...

I think it's those turny things where the strings end.... Still don't know why they're there, but if you turn them the wrong way, the strings break. I stay away from 'em.
-
Nah ...it is that metal rthing you need to come into your house and that always seems to jump to the left before you put in into the hole of the door. It always happens after 20 or so Guinesses.
Oh ...and it always seens to pop up in the pocket your were sure you already looked into.
Hee -hee-hee ...
A tonal
D molished
I just looooove this club!

Next time I have a gig where I have to stand and wear a jacket I will call on you if it does not pay well! If you look real close you will see that I was only pretending to be reading the Real Book. I really can't see that far anymore and had forgot my reading glasses. The pains of old age, yikes!
Rory the blind one

Well ...how did that joke go
Yuk ....sheet music
The spanish guy talking english with a thick accent saying that he doesn't like the music.
You blind???

Yet another fine example of humanity! Nice bass, too, by the way, Dino...

Hey all,
This was from my band MPG's first gig in Hayward, California on Saturday. Erin-Oromion performed beatifully (if only I was that good) and caused the bass player in the other band to contract Bass Envy
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/65124/13650.jpg)
-
Ken:
Where did you play in Hayward? Next time give us all a head's up before the gig. Hayward ain't that far! By the way, is that an old Ibanez Bob Weir model on the right of the photo?
Bill, tgo
-
Hey Bill!
It was at Sherry's on Mission Blvd. Basically, we got about a weeks notice, and we were only given about 45 minutes to play, since we were playing ahead of the only band booked to play there. They did it as a favor to us, and we were treating it more as an audition for the club. We weren't even playing through our own gear (my rig is an SVT through an 8x10 and I double on keyboards that we didn't bring)
The Ibanez guitar is the other band's singer's guitar, but I think you're right about it.
If anyone lives near the Delta, we're playing at the Oakley YMCA on the 30th, start time is around noon. We'll have the full setup then, so you'll hear it properly. :-)

Anyway ...I played bass!!!
-
Paul,
What song(s) did you sing?
John
-
Oh ...uhuh... I didn't sang solo you know! It's the first time I got a mike in front of me on stage in a gig. We sang Happy Birthday to you of Steve Wonder (a capella - 1verse and chorus = first picture). I was also involved in Addicted to love (yeah...right). The girl who's birthdayparty we played also asked Wake me up before you gogo (Wham), Greased Lightning (John TRavolta) and THe time of my life from the film Dirty Dancing.
***sigh*** not our stuff but ...well ...I liked to play the basslines and ... well ...I sang ...kindoff ...together with our ladysinger.
