Hi All.
My roadtrip has landed me in northwest Louisiana and I thought I'd post where I'm at next week just in case anyone is in the neighborhood and wants to 'pop in'.
Tuesday and Thursday 5-8, at 'La Bossier Casino' located in the Ramada Inn right off of I-20 at the Industrial St. exit in Bossier City LA. I'm doing this one as a duo with a keyboard player.
Saturday April 7th 10-1, at the 'Noble Savage Tavern' located at 417 Texas St. in Shreveport LA. This is going to be as a four piece with keyboards, bass, drums and guitar.
So far this is working out quite well. My first day in town (two hours after arriving) I'm playing an open mike. The next night I played another one and from those two I scored these gigs. I also sat in with another band at the Horseshoe Casino last night and I've got an open invite to do it again this Friday at Lee's in Bossier City. Sweet.
Videos will be up on YouTube in a day or two with the open mike from Monday at Lee's.
More to come.
Best Regards,
Kimberly

Glad to hear you arrived safe and sound. Sounds like a lot of music and a lot of fun!

Hi Bill,
All is well, thanks. A lot of music no doubt and absolutely, Fun City! Life is looking good.

Adding to the list.
I'll be playing with the Rohn Maxey Band on April 29th from 6:30-9:30 on the main stage during the Holiday in Dixie festival.

Thanks Dave.

Cool looking club on the vids!
-
Hi Dave,
It really is a pretty cool place and though you can't tell from listening, it was shockingly and nearly deafening loud on the stage, not that that was a problem mind you. ;)
Truly the blues jam has about a 20 year history here in the area with the host Jerry Beach traveling it from club to club. He's been at this one for at least five years according to what I've heard. An interesting concept having the jam follow the host, but it's surely working here.
Anyway, I'm having a blast. I put in about 10 hours of practicing/jamming yesterday with my cousin playing keyboards selecting material for some of the upcoming shows. Tonight I'm relaxing. It's been a heck of a week.

Kimberly

Hey Everyone.
I've scored another gig on April 21st in Ruston LA at the Sundowner Tavern starting at 9:00. A 12 piece horn band is going to open and then four or five of them are going to hang out and sit in with the band I'm with. From the 'sound' of it all, the acutal band will be eight to nine pieces counting the 'horn guys'. Sweet.
If anyone happens to be in the neighborhood, come on in and say howdy.
Best Regards,
Kimberly

Adding another gig for June 2nd at the 'Noble Savage Tavern', 417 Texas St. Shreveport LA. Four piece with Stan Hoffman keyboards, Danny Wilder guitar, John Hoffman drums and yours truly. 10:00-1:00
I'm still doing the Tuesday and Thursday duo in Bossier City and working on scoring a solo act for Wednesdays. I'm pondering an offer to host an open mike at a place a few blocks away from where I'm staying. Pros and cons. Life is good.

Kimberly

Sounds like you've settled right into Louisiana. Good for you. Are you having time for Youtube or photos?
Sam
-
Kimberly,
West Lousiana is a great place-
I spent a considerable amount of time in the Ruston and Grambling area. Enjoy it, there is a very distinct flavor to that area of Louisiana.

Hey Kimberly:
Great to hear that things are going so well musically. Sounds like BIG fun!

Hi Everyone.
Kimberly here responding to messages. ;)
Hi Sam. - Everything is going very well for me here. I do need to get on top of the videos though as I hate that I missed stuff like last weekend as it was such good music. Maybe I can get something tonight when I'm out sitting in with another band.
Hi Toby. - I agree about the unique flavor of the local 'culture' and area. This is 'where I growed up' as a young'un and I grew up on the blues, southern rock, rock and roll and general mayhem. Ahhh...the good ole days.
Hey Bill. - I'm having a really great time. There's a lot of music in the area and some great 'authentic' blues guys around. As I mentioned to Sam I need to get on top of the videos, as there's been some really good stuff happening. I've been out playing a lot making the rounds, establishing my 'credentials' and having a blast. Life is good.
Good to hear from ' ya'll ' ;)
Best Regards,
Kimberly

Hi Everyone.
Here's a couple of videos from last night at Hotrods and Hogs, Shreveport LA, of Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition' and 'Boogie on Reggae Woman' when I sat in with the 'Second Chance' band. I'll post another one later on this evening. I hope you enjoy, I sure did. (One of the things I had 'forgotten' in my break from music was, how way cool it is to play with a band. It's a real gas.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKv_vRPeiaE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKv_vRPeiaE) - Superstition

The first vid didn't load for me; the page wasn't there.
The second vid is cool! Nice groove, nice solo!
And I especially liked it when the waitress came up and asked if we needed anything and then brought me a cup of coffee!!
-
Hey Dave,
It looks like the first one is live now so it should be good to go.
Thank you very much and thank you and thank you!
Southern hospitality. Gotta luv it! ;)
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Yes, it's there.
Another good groove!
When the band came down, I could hear your tone better; very nice tone!
By the way; love the credits at the end!

Hi Everybody.
Here's another video from this last Saturday. It was a fun time. Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's 'Real Mother for Ya'. Enjoy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qesHXSGqN9c (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qesHXSGqN9c)
Hey Dave,
Thank you again, I appreciate the feedback.
I didn't notice what I was playing through other than it being a GK head connected to a GK 2-10. I didn't mess with the EQ, it had the 'standard' smiley face, and I only rolled a little of the highs out on my bass cause it seemed kind of bright at the time. Overall it was a good tone, had decent headroom and seemed to be a pretty decent system. (I like my Aguilar a lot better, but it sure is heavy.)
Windows Movie Maker will make a movie maker of me yet. Rumor has it 'effects' are next on the list. ;)
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Kimberly,
Those vids are very funky-cool. Thanks.
Rich
-
On this tune, that tone really stands out during your break. Sounds great for a rig that wasn't yours and you didn't touch!
-
Hey Everybody.
Rich - Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed them. It's a 'gas' to play with pros.
Dave - Thank you again. It was way cool. Especially when I compare that with this last weekend with another 'sit in' with a different group. I don't know what model it was, but it was an Ampeg and it just didn't 'cut the mustard'. Granted it was outclassed/underpowered (smaller combo amp) for the gig overall, but it just wasn't happening. What a difference between the two.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Hey Everybody.
And so it ends. My roadtrip is cut short prematurely. Six weeks of 'playing around with the guys' to the detriment of my solo stuff was/is enough and I'm heading home.
I thoroughly enjoyed the music and to make new friends, reacquaint with old ones and visiting with relatives...absolutely priceless, so I'm chalking this one up as a vacation. Sure I worked, but honestly I was only 'playing around' havin' some fun. Now it's time to get real again and start 'hammering' my material again. This brings to mind a 'style' change I'm going through. It's amazing how my synth work is coming along, but most interesting is finding out I'm quite the Dixieland horn player. Who wudda thunk it? Certainly not I.
Nuff for now as I'm heading northwest.
Apologies to those I'll not be able to see on my way back. Unfortunately economics, inclement weather and building desire to go home is coloring the trip. So, 20 hours after leaving Shreveport LA, I'm shutting it down for the night in Amarillo Tx in an RV park. Next stop northwest of here. Updates when I can.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Kimberly:
Sounds like an excellent musical experience. Which patch on your Roland did you use for the Dixieland horn parts?
Bill, tgo
-
Kimberly your LOW notes.....they just Rattle Me!
-
Hi Guys.
Bill - It was an awesome good time, though with high 80's to low 90's temperature and 800-1200% minimum humidity, it wasn't the most pleasant of vacation spots. Don't get me wrong though, great people, great music.
Nothing special with my 'horns'. ;) I'm using the 'moody sax' and mute trumpet' patches on my GR-20. If I'm 'hot' and 'on a roll' I'll get bold and try the clarinet. It doesn't track as well as the other two so it can be 'challenging' at times. Something I learned recently, just an FYI, is when using octaves on the 'moody sax', it can make a pretty decent 'horn section'. It seems because the two notes have a little bit of tracking differential/latency, it adds another level of 'authenticity' to the mix. Just something I 'picked up' lately. Disregard if you already knew this.
I'll likely record some video tomorrow night at my open mike and see if I can't capture some for demo purposes.
Nice to hear from you. Maybe the next Alembic Club get together our paths will cross again.
Keavin - Thank you, I appreciate the feedback and compliment. What else can I say? ;) Thanks Man.
Best Regards to All,
Kimberly
PS. I arrived home safely Sunday afternoon. Floods, rain, lightening, thunder, etc.. Another 'typical' Kimberly road trip. Sheesh.. ;)
-
Hey Everyone.
I've posted three videos from my last night in town (May 8th) before hitting the long road home. These are from my new 'Doing a Duo' ;) series.
I'll be posting more from a couple of other gigs in the next week or so.
Hope you enjoy.

Hey Everyone.
I'm playing from 8-10pm, July 14th at Tizley's EuroPub doing my solo act. I'm also booked for September 15th, same time, at the same venue.
18929 Front St. Poulsbo, Wa. (upstairs)
I'm still running the Wednesday open mike 8-11, also at the EuroPub. A good time to be had by all, (though I'm not able to run as much of my material as I'd like), it's a lot of fun.
I'm also working out the details of playing the Pavilion at Liberty Bay park in Poulsbo for a solo 'head liner' performance. Either late this month or most likely early August. This will be an open to the public, no charge (donations accepted), performance of my solo 'stuff'. Once I figure out whether if we're going to have food concessions, I'll post specifics of time and date.
More to follow.
Regards,
Kimberly
-
Upstairs; does that mean your load in and load out involve a stair carry?
-
Hey Dave,
Fortunately the rear entrance is 'ground level', so to speak, and only requires a short jaunt. As is usually the case as well, someone most always helps me load in and out with the What's a little lady like you carrying all that big ole stuff etc... ;) Or at least this usually happens when I stand there and make what 'appears to be' a tremendous effort moving stuff around as I mutter and sigh to myself. ;)
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Kimberly,
Just make sure that when they help you, your stuff goes where YOU intended it to go...
Ken (TEO)
-
LOL!!
Thanks! Cute story!
-
Hey Elwoodblue,
If you're talking the Pegasus I'm playing there once a month so there's plenty of opportunity to 'catch my act' again.
If it's the Casa Luna, it's so disorganized I don't even know when I'll play there again, other than it'll be 'sometime soon'. I definitely recommend calling in advance as in, *no sooner than show time*, because the staff is likely 'in the dark' also. Heck of a way to run a business, but as the owner's husband is disabled due to stroke and she's taking care of him, her kids/household and the business all at the same time, it'll be like this for a while.
There's also my open mike at Tizley's in Poulsbo every Wednesday from 8-11pm. ;)
Hope to see you sometime.
Best Regards,
Kimberly

Still doing my open mike hostess gig. Month 16 and going strong.
I got a really nice write up in the entertainment section of the local paper, the North Kitsap Herald.
http://www.northkitsapherald.com/portals-code/list.cgi?paper=95&cat=44&id=1194388&more=0 (http://www.northkitsapherald.com/portals-code/list.cgi?paper=95&cat=44&id=1194388&more=0)
My CD project is almost back to square one. I just wasn't satisfied with the results I was getting and decided to 'do it myself'. Thus explains the 'newly arrived' Tascam 2488 Mark II to my 'bag of goodies'. Recording is a breeze, it's the mix where the magic happens.
Brings to mind I'm 'entertaining' the thought of 'offing' my on stage amp(s) and running strictly through my PA. I just acquired a Yamaha EMX-5016CF powered mixer. Sixteen channels, dual effects and 500 watts a side. In 'messing around' with it, I'm running eight channels counting a CD player for break music with inputs from my looper, synth and drum machine. With a pair of 2 way 12's for my mains and using my Epifani for a 'sub', it's a pretty decent sounding system. The downside is I'm carrying more and more stuff with more and more complexity for set up. Must be for the 'love of the music', as it sure isn't for the pay. :D
And that's the way it is April 30th, 2008.
Best regards to one and all,
Kimberly
-
Hi Kimberly; was wondering where you been. Nice write-up in the Herald!

Hi Dave,
Thank you, which segways quite nicely into 'fixing' the link'. ;)

Graeme - Happy birthday in advance! At just over 21 ;) you're looking mighty spry for such a wee young lad! Must be all that good country living and clean air.
I propose a toast to One and All at the Bainbridge Bass Rumble and if we manage to survive all the toasts, another one on the 26th. Enjoy the concert!
Til then.

Coastal Cafe
8082 NE State Highway 104 #102
Kingston, WA 98346
(360) 297-3326
7-9pm.
All ages, 'intimate' (small) venue.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
So Kimberly, does intimate in your book mean the same as mine-small and very unaccomadating?
-
Hi Adam,
Nice to hear from you.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/intimate (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/intimate)
in?ti?mate - adj.
Marked by informality and privacy: an intimate nightclub.
Very private; closely personal: one's intimate affairs. ;)
The Coastal has seating for about 25 people. Were I to be so fortunate and play to a standing room only audience, maybe you could boost the numbers by 10 and that's best case. I can't 'reach out and touch someone' from where I set up, but I can almost touch a table that would have someone seated in front of me.
The real positive is they're very friendly and supportive of a 'lowly' solo bassist. ;) Casual fun gig with lot's of yakking between tunes and back and forth banter. Good place, good people.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
An FYI.
Plan change as the Coastal cancelled Don's gig due to new ownership and reorganizing. I'm still supposed to be good for the 18th. Updates as needed.
Kimberly
-
Hi Guys.
The Coastal gig for this Friday is cancelled due to the new owners not having completed the licensing process. Updates as they happen when they happen.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Hi Kimberly, I've seen you on Youtube before. Very entertaining. I especially liked the first song on the Feb.2007 video(beautiful). I felt like telling some of the people in the audience to shut up. Why did you choose to string your bass high side up?
keep plucking strong, Soren
-
Hi Soren,
Nice to meet you.
The short story is, are you sitting? ;)
Seriously. As a naive and silly young'un, due to the sudden and violent removal of half of my two middle fingers and thumb on my left hand with a homemade 'bomb', combined with learning how to play after the fact and not owning my own instrument for a couple of years, it was easier for me to learn to play left handed with right hand stringing rather than try and turn a friend's strings 'upside down' and run the risk of having the snot whupped outta me. ;D
Best Regards,
Kimberly
PS. I'm glad you liked my video. Sadly, such is the life of a 'lowly' solo bassist with crowd 'noise'. I get no respect til I turn it up and commence rumblin'. Then I get told to turn it back down. But there for a few minutes or so, well we all know bass rules, nothing personal to all you 'others'. ;D
-
Back on track. ;)
Summer Music Camp performance/demonstration at McChord AFB, Bldg 560, Tuesday July 29th. Gonna be a fun gig! 45 minute set, ages 6-12.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Ages 6 to 12. Hee hee!
-
Hi David,
As it turned out it was actually ages 5-7! ;D It seemed there were at least 100 kids, but as it turned out the real number was closer to 25. Amazing how much energy those kids had! 'Dancing in the aisles' is literal! :D
One of the little guys asked me how I did the walk and talk. I was totally stumped and asked the teacher to help me out. It was about my hand moving around on the neck and the sound of my music. Sweet. Walk and Talk. Hmmm...sounds like a song title. ;)
This brings to mind the first time I ever heard music performed live. Third grade and some kind of special event that had the school in the auditorium listening to a band play. I remember being amazed, as I made the connection to their performance of 'Puff the Magic Dragon' to the same song playing on the radio and on the charts during the same 'era'. (Damn, I'm getting old) ;)
Anyways... towards the end of my gig some of the 'older' twelve year olds from down the hall got to come in and listen. I saw several of them 'get it', or at least have that 'big-eyed' look while they were listening to the music. It was *way* cool.
Afterwards I spoke with the sponsor of the gig and told her my story and how cool it was to have been able to play for the kids and share the music with them as it had been shared with me way back when. Goes to show, goes around comes around.
It was especially sweet as more than a few of the kids parents are in Iraq right now. I told them to let me know when they wanted me to come back again and I'm there. I'm looking forward to it big time!
Nice to see you David.
Best Regards,
Kimberly

Hey Kimberly, I found you on My Space after coming by your videos on You Tube. Again just awesome. I think I wrote you asking about some looping stuff. Best of luck to you on all your gigs over the next few months.
Mike
-
Hi Mike,
Glad you like my 'stuff'.
Ummm...I'm somewhat at a loss referring to your message about looping. I surely hope I answered your question(s) and your message didn't get lost in the shuffle. In the event I didn't respond, please feel free to ask again as I'm more than happy to help. The only 'downside' is I often use way too many words when a few would have worked just fine. ;)
Hope to hear from you soon.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
That's a nice looking calendar Kimberly!
-
Hi David,
Long time no see and congratulations again on your new sixer!
Yeah, the gigs came together pretty well for October, though it seems it's getting harder to fill the calendar. My Redmond gig just went to being a sports bar. A shame, it was such a fun gig. But, the Coastal is back in business, so at least I can fill the loss of the Redmond gig. Time tells the tale what the future holds. It's all good.
Speaking of gigs ;) here's my new sixer debut from Friday. Just noodlin' around, but she sure is a sweetie.

Til next time. Be well my friend.

-
Hi Guys,
Me again. ;)
Here's another one from my Friday gig. This one really shows my left hand 'Kimberlesque' picking technique. ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oNJ_vmbaoQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oNJ_vmbaoQ)
BTW, my farmers market gig on Saturday went well for approximately 1 1/2 hours, then the winds came. Gusts recorded in the area to 57 mph. Lucky for me they came nowhere close to that, though a sign was knocked over and they had to add a 45 lb weigth to the stand to keep it in the upright position. As it went I quit 10 minutes early and luckily escaped the worst of it all. Granted we weren't as hard hit as the greater Seattle area, but when the tent started rocking and I felt the rain in the face, it was almost past time to go. Fun in the PacNW.
On a real positive I'm booked back for next summer. As the market manager said, If you've got people standing out in the rain to listen to your music, you've done really well. Sweet.

Kimberly

I love that picture!!! It's like a miniature bar; one table, three chairs ... and a live band! Yes, the tickets will sell out quickly, but there's not a bad seat in the house!
-
Just watched both the videos; great as always! I especially like the six string stuff; really nice tone, and some great runs!!
-
Hi David,
Lol! Now that I look at that pic again, that's funny!!! :D
Glad you liked the videos! That sixer is really something! Another couple of months and there's gonna be some serious beautiful music coming off the Kitsap peninsula.
See you around.

Hi Guys,
An amazingly short (for me anyways ;) ) video from a few days ago when I was playing around in a local coffee shop.
'White Christmas'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGb94cuB4J4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGb94cuB4J4)
As with the Youtube description, when I started seeing holiday commercials on the television and decorations in the stores, I figured it was time to bring my one and only holiday tune out and start dusting it off. ;)
The new six string has really added a new dimension with the addition of the higher octave section. What a Sweetie she is!

Kimberly

Hi Graeme,
Thank you very much!

Very nice Kimberly! Your chordal technique continues to get better; which is an area the six string really opens up. And I see you're taking a new padded chair to your gigs! Makes those long sets a little more comfy; but I'm guessing it's a bit tough getting it in and out of the car.
-
Hi David,
Thank you! The six string continues to amaze me! Such tone and 'opportunities' to make sweet sounds. With hindsight I can see a difference in my style from even a month ago when I posted this video. Much more comfortable with my 'becoming one with my bass'. ;)
Funny about the chair! For nearly a full year now, I've been using my padded piano bench to hold my mixer and been sitting on a wooden stool. It was only a couple of weeks ago I finally got an amp stand for the mixer and 'got my bench back'! :D

I recently offered to help a lady load in her gear for a gig at a friend's pub. Big Mistake. I got the third degree about being a chauvenistic pig. And if she actually needed some help, she would have hired a crew of girls because there is no man worthy of carrying her gear.
Of course, this was Santa Cruz.

Hi Everyone.
I just wanted to update the haps, so I copy/pasted my latest newsletter.
Begins.
Another 'flash gig' this Friday, August 3rd at Coastal Coffee Inc. cafe/shop in Kingston, WA.
Start time is 7:00 til I get tired of playing.
This is a new venue which is 'experimenting' with having live music. If you're not gigging, or have other plans, it would be great to see some familiar faces. Not to apply any pressure mind you but, the more people who show, the more success this 'experiment' will have which could ultimately result in another venue for local performers. Well worth the time for the 'big picture', not to mention getting the opportunity to hear my latest material. ;)
Located at the intersection of Miller Bay/Hansville Road and Highway 104 in the 'Albertsons' shopping center complex.
Coastal Coffee/Cafe
8208 NE State Highway 104 STE 104
Kingston, WA
360-297-3326
For something else, I'll be playing at a benefit for an injured employee from Tizley's EuroPub this coming Thursday the 2nd. Start time is 6pm and will easily go as late as 10:00ish. A most worthy cause as she has no insurance, not to mention she's unable to work.
Tizley's EuroPub
18928 Front St.
Poulsbo, WA
360-394-0080
On a related note the open mike at Tizley's is still running strong, every Wednesday, 8-11. ;)
Hope to see you there.
Best Regards,
Kimberly Lynn
-
Start time is 7:00 til I get tired of playing
So then they never close?
-
You're a funny guy Dave. ;) If opportunity ever presents and we find ourselves in the same part of the world, it would be a pleasure to meet in person.
Til then,
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
I'm looking forward to it!
-
Hey Everyone.
Another 'flash gig'.
Casa De Luna Of Poulsbo
18830 Front Street Northeast
Poulsbo, WA 98370
6-8 Friday. Another gig that's never had live music and, if all goes well with my performance (which it likely will ;) ), I'll be back on Saturday, same time, same place.
Undoubtedly the easiest gig I've ever booked, as my 'reputation' preceded me via word of mouth from friends and employees. An introduction, a statement of desire to play my music, economics, setting the date and time, bidding each other a great day, nice to meet you, see you soon, out the door. I kid you not, two-three minutes total elapsed time. Ahhh...were they all to be so easy.
If anyone's in the neighborhoood, pop on in. It would be nice to meet another Alembic owner and the opportunity to see/hear a 'budding' bass soloist? Priceless. ;)
Best Regards,
Kimberly
PS. The benefit from a couple of weeks ago raised a bit over two grand. Not too bad for six musicians and four hours and even better, the timing was just right to help them through some hard times.

Hi Kimberly; I'm curious. What's your set list like; and how long is your set?
-
Hi Dave, nice to hear from you.
So...What's your set list like; and how long is your set?. Tough question(s) in a way because while the tunes themselves may 'be the same', the 'content/arrangements' can change due to circumstance of having a crowd, or not having a crowd, or as also often has it, my mood. ;) Celestial tinklings e.g. 'Breezin' by George Benson can be five minutes or less, or it could be ten minutes or even more. For example last week started slow and there really weren't very many people there so I was just killing some time and 'playing around'. 'Fifteen' minutes later it ends having used different synth voices to 'break it up' and the employees/management and the few people there loved it! An example of something that has been known to happen. ;) (One of my strengths is improv and I have to be careful to 'not' play too long.) Anyway, add a verse/chorus/bridge or not, all crowd dependent determines the song/set length.
To continue to answer your question, my YouTube videos capture the 'essence' of what I do pretty well.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Vincent by Don McClean, 'Something', 'Across the Universe', 'Here, There, Everywhere', 'Do you want to know a Secret' by the Beatles, 'Little Wing' Stevie Ray version and 'Classical Gas' Mason Williams make up most of my 'stand alone' material with just bass.
With the looper and synth, 'Got Blues?' is a crowd pleaser especially with the synth saxophone, trumpet and organ voices, not to mention the 'lead bass'. 'Can't Hold Out' by Clapton, a fast 'Kimberly' swing, a 'Kimberly' boogie woogie, 'Low Rider' War, 'American Woman' Guess Who, 'Voodoo Child' Hendrix, a Phil Keaggy 'Salvation Army Band' groove, a 'Kimberly' funk groove, a fast 'Kimberly' country 2/4 (Bass Boogie), a 'Sweet Georgia Brown' shuffle, She's a Woman, Beck/Kimberly version, slow blues, fast blues, medium blues, 'Kimberly' rock grooves, 'Kimberly' latin grooves etc...
Length of the set can and will also vary based on crowd, or lack of. Last Saturday I played an hour and 25 minutes before taking a ten minute break. A couple of weeks ago I played an hour and a half set. All dependent upon whether the crowd is 'hot or not'. About a 35 minute set is probably the least amount of time I've ever played. The gigs I'm booking are usually based on two hours with the first set at an hour followed by a 10-15 minute break. But, if the crowd is 'live' I'll play 'em for all I can.
And I hope this answers your questions.
Pauses for breath and bids adieu. ;)
Regards,
Kimberly
-
Thanks! That's a very descriptive answer; and very helpful!

New videos.
'Didgeridoodoo'
A clip taken at the Global Bean Coffee Traders 11/09/07. While warming up prior to the gig and looking for a different flute voicing, I 'stumbled' over a didgeridoo in my Roland GR-20 synth. After a bit of 'noodlin' around with a didgeridoo rhythm, a blending of flute and bass voicings and a little help from Carlos, 'Didgeridoodoo' was born.

'GrooviE'
A clip from Friday 11/09/07 at the Global Bean Coffee Traders in Silverdale, WA. An 'E' groove using an RC-50 looper with a bass and 'guitar' line looping and accompanying a lead bass melody.

Last two videos from the Global Bean gig 11/09/07.
'Got Blues?'
A 'study in evolution' comparison with the previous version from my first solo gig in January '07. Taped at the Global Bean Coffee Traders in Silverdale, WA 11/09/07. A twelve bar blues using two looping parts and one synthesizer voicing for the Moody Sax solo section. And of course stand alone bass for the lead melody/solo sections.

'Keaggy Groove'
Inspired by Phil Keaggy's 'Salvation Army Band'. Another study in evolution from the previous version captured from my first solo gig in January '07. Taped at the Global Bean Coffee Traders in Silverdale, WA 11/09/07. Three looping parts, one stand alone Alembic bass and yours truly.

Didgeridoo, my favorite instrument... it's the sound of life.
-
I love the Got Blues piece! The sax part is nice.
By the way; the audio/video quality of these latest videos seems much nicer than the previous vids. I'm guessing it's a combination of better lighting and better camera placement. Both the notes from your bass and the smile on your face are much clearer. In fact, these last five videos really show off the very nice stuff you're doing with your plucking hand. I'm really enjoying watching these videos!
-
Hi Guys.
Hi Paul - I was rather bemused when I came across the didgeridoo in my synth, but interestingly enough it was kinda easy to feel that 'natural groove' and run with it. The rest is as 'they' say, history.
Hi Dave - Seems like I'm sending a lot of thank you's your way, not that I mind.
I agree with this latest batch of videos being of better quality with both audio and visual. In looking back to 'the early days' I'm somewhat disturbed at the poor quality of both the audio and visual. However, for historical record etc, I feel an obligation to leave 'em there.
I'll try and see about getting someone to get close ups of my plucking hand 'in action'. You'll see it's a unique 'Kimberlyesque' style, if for no other reason than being digitally challenged and now that I think about it, 'upside down'. I'm sure you also noticed I'm playing a lot of closed string harmonics here of late using my thumb as the mute. I'm not sure if I can even play any more without using that technique, as it's become such a habit not to mention fun. (Especially when I 'hit one' just right and it just sings. I love my Alembic.)
Back on topic, I'm really glad you're enjoying my 'stuff'. Bottom line, I'm having a gas.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
I've been using that same technique a lot recently too.

Hi Guys.
I just booked into a new venue which takes me 'across the water' (Puget Sound) and into what's known as the 'Eastside' (a corridor of small and not so small towns and the small city of Bellevue on the eastern side of Lake Washington, pretty much suburbs of Seattle, though industrialized and commercialized as with most peripheral areas of metropolitan areas these days).
Anyway... ;)

New Year's Eve; cool!
-
Hey Dave.
You know, it's still kind of a shock to me I'm gigging as much as I am as a solo bassist and I have high hopes and strong indications I'll be gigging even more in the new year.
My first anniversary is the first week in January and to say it's been an interesting year is very much an understatement. I went into my first gig with 14 songs, a lot of heart and strong improv skills ;). I'm runnning about 45 tunes now with about half of them originals. It's no exaggeration when I say I'm having the time of my life musically as a solo bassist.
I think more importantly is I'm 'living proof' it can be done without being 'world class' so to speak. To date I've inspired at least a few other bassists to at a minimum entertain the thought of becoming a soloist. I wish you all the best.
Happy New Year to One and All.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Kimberly, you rock! All the best for the year ahead
-
Kimberly, your example is certainly inspiring. It appears that I'm changing my approach in that I've started practicing on my six string. I'm thinking that some of the things I am working on will be a lot more interesting if not confined to four strings. There will be a learning curve, I get lost fairly quickly on the six string, so it will be a while; but that's ok, learning is fun too!
-
Very cool Kimberly. I've thought about trying some solo gigs but there's just not many venues for that in my area.
Dave, try taking ONLY your 6 string on a few gigs, this way you have to play it. Thats how I made the adjustment on playing 6 and 8 string. Yea I made some mistakes but it I had to learn to swim or drown so to speak.
Happy New Year folks,
Olie
-
Olie; to get more specific, I need to get together with Mica to address a problem with one of the saddles on my six string before I can take it out of the house. And ideally, I'm looking to pick up one with a classic taper neck instead of the comfort taper I have now. But yes, you're right; at some point I need to get out of the house and just play.
-
Hi Guys.
Thanks for the responses. I really didn't expect them, as after posting my last I said to myself, 'Sheesh...where did all that come from? You need to get a life girl!' and thought about deleting it. I'm glad I didn't now. Thanks again for the responses Guys.
Hi John - Nice to see you again and thank you for your compliment. All the best to you and yours also. Very nice profile pic by the way.
Hi Dave - We've got to stop meeting like this! :D Best of times with your sixer and I hope you get the saddle problem settled quickly. I remember switching to my 'fiver' from my four and had the same issues with 'getting lost'. Six boggles my brain, though I have to confess to thinking about a seven. ;) I need to run to Bass Northwest and check out the Conklin they have while it's still there. It'll be the first time I've ever tried playing a bass with more than five. I really wonder about the neck width issue. Anyway, when it's time most likely I'll go with a custom Alembic six. It just seems like six should be plenty enough for me. Brings to mind, what's your tuning? E-f? E-e? B-c? B-b? ;)
Olie - Dude, I am so sorry I didn't schedule the time to get together when I was in Louisiana earlier this year. Truly a regret. For sure, it's a done deal next time through. Promise.
If I might make a suggestion? Work some material up and then find yourself some open mikes. Sure, people will look at you strange when you say you want to play solo bass. Matter of fact, you can count on it! :D But. Your instrument and your music will speak for you! That's when I've found the 'light goes on' for just about everywhere and for everyone I've ever played for. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, and this is nearly verbatim because it's about the same every time. I couldn't/didn't understand what the big deal was about going to see some bass player until I heard you play. S'truth. Many, many times I've heard that same thing. And as I've said myself many a time, one of the biggest challenges for me is the 'education' of the club owner/manager/public in general, that being a solo bassist doesn't mean playing a bass solo all night long. It's the getting in the door that's one of the tough ones. The gigs are there, you just have to educate/show them that they want you. ;)
Anyway, (hypothetical question) ;), how much more 'pure' can your music and playing your instrument be, then when playing as a soloist? Major, major sweetness and high, high coolness quotient. It's also rumored it could be addictive. Try it, I bet you'll like it. ;)
And with (all) that, a very good weekend to one and all and a most awesome new year!
Best Regards,
Kimberly, whose life is very, very good.

B to C.
I've been working on some things on the four string; but before I can start working with them on the six, I need to practice scales for a while. And that's ok since I like practicing scales!
Have a great New Years Gig!
-
Hi Guys.
A video from last night from somewhere around the end of the second set. As I had a 'feeling' the piano guy bailed and it was a long night. All told though it was real gas and much to my surprise I actually had material left over at the end of the night. Of course since I can 'stretch things out a bit' I shouldn't have been surprised. ;)
I call this one 'Coppin a Feel'. ;)

Best regards to one and all and a very happy new year.

Cool! You do indeed look like you're having a great time! Congrats on the show!
-
Kimberly,
Very nice. I've always enjoyed the clips you have put up on Youtube. I was wondering about your gear setup. I bought a Jamman looper this past year (largely inspired by the stuff you do with a bass and looper). I also play Epics (I have a 4 and a 5). I have found that my sound is a bit muddy when I have 2 or 3 things going. Do you just make sure you don't do different parts in the same range or do you change the EQ settings on the different parts? I see you reach down occasionally and adjust something. Any suggestions for me?
Rich
BTW, I really liked the sax sound you soloed with.
-
Hi Guys.
Thanks Dave! Just between you and me, there ought to be a law against having so much fun. ;) I'm not exaggerating when I say my soloist project is exceeding my expectations. It's been an interesting year to say the least.
Rich - Heya, long time no see and thank you. To try and answer your question, (congrats on the JamMan btw), have a seat and let me first establish my setup.
My looper and synth patches are 'tied together' via midi, so if I select patch #50 on the looper, the synth tracks the looper patch selection and changes to patch #50 also. So, I have my synth patch numbers matched up to my looper patch numbers, with the appropriate synth voice for the tune, to keep button pushes and knob spins to a minimum. Cool?
In this video I believe I first changed my synth patch, as 'Coppin a Feel' is patch #50 on the looper and the sax/synth patch I used is on patch #29, so I had to manually change the synth patch from #50 to #29. I can do this via the midi controls on my bass, but as it would take 21 pushes of a button, it was quicker to reach down and 'spin a knob'. As I said in the previous paragraph normally I'd have the patches matched up, but as this was an 'impulsive/improv' sax solo, I wasn't prepared in advance.
So, I went to patch #29 on the synth to play the sax patch/voice I wanted and then I believe I bumped the input level on the looper up some to bring the sax volume up some more.
Whew, it's so much easier to do then to explain. No prob though.
Realize most of the above applied to this video only. ;)
I remember when I had my RC-20XL I'd have a problem that sounds similar to what you're describing.
What I'd do is record the first loop a lot hotter via volume control on my bass. The second one would be a little less 'hot' than the first, but hotter than the third loop etc, etc. ;) After doing it like this I kinda got a feel for volume settings and adjustments and it did help in keeping the first parts 'coming through the mix'. The hardest part was remembering to keep turning the volume down for each new looper part. :D
On my RC-50 looper I have three separate channels/phrases I can record on, each with an individual/independent volume control, as well as an overall master volume. If I'm 'prepared' I'll have the volumes set to do as in the previous paragragh, with the volumes matched with each other without having to make adjustment. I believe the JamMan stacks each part on top of the previous one(s). Major difference between the two loopers, if I'm correct.
However for me, I'm generally not that 'together' so I *do* find myself adjusting individual channel/phrase volumes to keep them balanced. This is most likely what you've see me doing when I'm reaching down and doing something or another. ;) I don't have any EQ control on the looper itself just as an FYI.
It also helps to play your parts so they happen at different times in your groove. In this video (and on some of the others I've done), you can see/hear ;) how I'm doing this with the first two parts as I put down the bass line and then the 'guitar' part. The third part is built around the first bass part and the second guitar part, but as you mentioned in your message about different ranges, you'll note it's one octave higher then the bass part/first loop.
And I think that answers your questions and as always I'm happy to try and help as best as I can. I'm only sorry I can't seem to keep it less wordy and easier to follow. Feel free to ask for clarification.
With (all) that, it's getting late so I'm off to sleepy time.
Nice to hear from you Rich. All my best.
Take care of yourself Dave. Be seeing ya 'round. ;)
Best Regards,
Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly! Hello, Bonnie Rose!!,
I really enjoy your playing. Keep the YouTube stuff coming. It will probably be a while before I can get out there to hear you in person :[
Don't mean to interrupt your thread, but I just wanted to let our new friend, Bonnie, know about being able to post her gigs on her own little thread. Although everyone looks at yours ;), Bonnie might get more notice on a seperate entry. SOOO, Bonnie Rose, all you need to do is go to the Gig's heading, scroll to the bottom, click on where it sez start new thread and post all your upcoming events for everyone to see.
Looking forward to checkin' things out, Have fun, Mike =]

Hi Mike, (I just figured who the Mike dude is on my Myspace invitation.)
Thank you and I'm glad you like my videos, which reminds me I should glean through the latest and see if I've 'got anything' worth posting. As far as seeing me 'live', though it is a long way to Ohio, you never can tell as it's a small world and getting smaller. Not to mention I'm beginning to entertain the idea of another road trip this summer with 'more better' planning this time. ;)
Hi Bonnie Rose.
Nice to see you again and sounds like you're doing well gigging around. More power to you girlfriend.
It really would be a better idea to start your own thread with gigging, as it'll be easier for folks to find out where to go to see you playing. No problem as far as I'm concerned, it'll just make life simpler for everyone.
To keep this on track. ;)
The Tizley's Europub open mike (every Wednesday 8-11pm hostessed by yours truly) ;) is still going strong and we had our first anniversary two weeks ago. Management is pleased with the way it's developed and my hostess gig is 'on' indefinitely.
Back off track to one of my patented/copyrighted 'Kimberly Ramble(s)' ?. ;)
It's only just a little short of amazing how times have changed since my first open mike there. From dragging in my bass amp, a cord bag, mike stand and house supplied Kustom PA, to powered mixer, two Roland 12 two way mains and stands, three cord bags, two bass amps (to split my synth signal and run it dedicated), piano bench, 3 feet worth of floor pedals (Behringer midi foot controller, RC-50 looper, GR 20 synth, Dr. Distorto, and a couple of A/B switches) and last but not least, six LED PAR 36's on a single light tree. Pretty much all thanks to Tizley's. Sweet gig.
Back on track, end 'Kimberly Ramble(s)' ?. ;)

I'm also going to be playing at Tizley's Europub on a weekend sometime soon. It's been a while since I've done anything other hostessing my open mike there, so this should be fun for staff, audience and me. I'll post the date when we work it out.
The Casa Luna gig is hit and miss. I just finished up something like five/six months of Saturdays there and we're now going to a three performer rotation, so if you're thinking about making plans to come out and see some crazy a$$ bass player doing a bass solo all night long, you should call first.

Schedule revision. Sheesh.... ;)
The 'stick'.
The Global Bean has been cancelled but 'may be' rescheduled for February.
The 'carrot'.
They gave me two more dates, March 7th and April 18th.
I also just added February 23rd at Tizley's EuroPub located in beautiful downtown Poulsbo.
This should be a gas as I usually only play about half an hour of my material before opening the open mike on Wednesdays. Now I get to play two hours.
If you're 'in the neighborhood', please feel free to 'pop on in'. All ages venue.
Best Regards,
Kimberly

Hi Guys.
Adding a couple more dates.
The Global Bean did reschedule and I'm playing there on February 8th. All ages venue, nice room, nice folks. Matter of fact, the folks are so nice, they added May 9th to my schedule.

Hi Everyone.
I thought I'd 'consolidate' my February gig's schedule/location and do a copy/paste of my February newsletter which will now follow this ridiculously yet typically long, Kimberlyesque ? sentence/paragraph.
Hey Everyone.
For all those who are 'locals', I've got some good gigs coming up for this month. See my gigs schedule ( http://www.myspace.com/bassplayerkimberly (http://www.myspace.com/bassplayerkimberly) )for details, but for now here's the 'bassics' (sic). ;D
Thursday February 7th, Pegasus Coffee House - Bainbridge Island
Great gig, nice supportive atmosphere and I just 'kinda be me' with some no BS pure play from the heart have a good time Kimberly music. Highly recommended if I do say so myself. ;)
Friday February 8th, Global Bean Coffee Traders - Silverdale, WA
Another great gig with a 'listening audience' and another 'good time get down Kimberly music' venue and of course, (as if there there could be any doubt), very highly recommended.
Saturday February 16th, Three Lions Pub - Redmond, WA
My second time through on this one and if the first time was any kind of an indicator this is going to be a good one also. This one's a good location for all you Seattleites and Eastsiders being right in the heart of beautiful downtown Redmond.
Saturday February 23rd, Tizley's EuroPub - Poulsbo, WA
An opportunity to play my material at my open mike hostess venue, expect with the added benefit/bonus of instead of my usual 'play 30 minutes/open the open mike', on this one I get to play for two hours. Sweet. And lest we not forget and since I'm on the subject of Tizley's, my hostess gig at the open mike is now in it's 56th week and been extended indefinitely. Every Wednesday 8-11 and highly recommended. ;) Seriously, you should get there early as it's been standing room only the last couple of months. Good people, good venue, good music and I hear there's some 'crazy a$$ed chick bass player' that lays down some serious rumblin'. Come see for yourself if you don't believe me. ;) Also rumored to be The place to be on Wednesday nights in Poulsbo. S'truth and I kid you not, that's what I heard and unsolicited at that.
For those 'non-locals' I posted a new tune onto my Myspace page. Pretty decent sound quality Kimberly original get down groove called 'Sassy'. You've likely seen/heard it on YouTube, but this is an actual studio recording from last week. Much more better than my usual video 'quality' audio and as is the norm/usual with myself, very highly recommended. ;)
And with all that (pauses for breath), ;D
My warmest wishes and best of regards to one and all.
Kimberly Lynn - Solo Bassist ;)

Wish I lived closer We don't have anything like this here in this hole. This area is pretty much a wasteland , for playing OR listening.
New tune RAWKS, Kimberly! Tried to add it to my profile, but it wouldn't let me =[
Have fun, Mike, tho
-
Hi Mike,
Sorry to hear about the lack of 'decent' venues in your area, that's really gotta suck.
Glad you like 'Sassy', thank you. It's nowhere near being as 'free spirited' as when I play live, but I'm pretty pleased with the results, even though it's going to be remixed. Less effects, minor tweaks, it'll all be good. Anyway, I put too much pressure on myself trying to 'keep it together' when I recorded so I didn't dare try any 'flash'. Maybe as I gain more experience...
I'll see if I can't send you a copy via email if you like, as I didn't want to make it 'available' online just because it seemed to be a good idea. It won't be the first cut, but will definitely be going on my CD. My next time in the studio is going to be on the 19th. From the last session I've got seven tunes recorded with about 38 minutes of material, with three more tunes to record and a couple more I'm still working. Time it's all over I should have close too or a bit more than an hour of material.
Just 'for the record', here's the CD title.
'Laying on the Bottom, Playing on the Top'.
Stay tuned. ;)
Best Regards,
Kimberly

This took me a while to decide that it makes sense. Laying on the Bottom is kinda like laying on the mustard; so, in that regard it makes sense. A bass player who stays below the seventh fret and never touches the G string could be said to be lying on the bottom; however, when she gets a groove going, she's laying down a nice bassline. Two kids share a bunk bed; one's lying on the top and the other's lying on the bottom. The neighbor has a double decker hen house; and yes, some are laying on the bottom. Two humans are sharing a single bed; neither is laying on the bottom. And no, I haven't been laying on the sauce; nor was I lying in wait for an opportunity to bring this subject up. And no, I haven't been laying it on thick; and I certainly haven't been lying about it. But I have been lying around some this evening; and earlier I was laying up groceries in the pantry.
