Post by: jazzyvee on June 26, 2011, 08:15:27 AM
I have my next bass playing gig coming up next month at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. They have a jazz club there on a Friday evening so we are booked to do that.
The set list will be made up of, Stanley Clarke, Return to Forever, Jeff Lorber, Marcus Miller, Victor Bailey, Billy Cobham, Lenny White.

It's also free so if you are local and wanna pop along  that would be great.

Alembic Weapons of choice for the gig. Europa 5 and SC Deluxe. F1-X, SF-1

What a handsome man, with impeccable taste in basses. . . . . now, who the hell is this mysterious Delano Mills ? ? ? ?  I must admit he has a fabulous website.

Jazzyvee,

NICE playlist!  Wish I was in the area to witness this one.  Maybe steal a few licks.  I didn't say that out loud did I?

Yep Dave, we went through that at rehearsal last night and still a lot of work needed on that particular track. It's a very challenging track to play. The demand on technique, timing, pace and the delivery of the dynamics is quite intense.

Then you remember that these guys were probably still in their 20's when they recorded it originally.

But we will pursue it.

Unfortunately we had to cut the length of the gig due to constraints at the venue which we were miffed about. We had to  drop a few tracks so Soldier, Hymn of the seventh galaxy and Burn Brightly got the chop as  those were ones we had relearsed least so it made sense.
Anyway the gig went fantastically well. We had the place heaving with people. Initially we thought the audience would be lost with the music we had in the set. But thankfully they loved every track which is a great thing to happen at a gig.

We've already been offered a gig the Yardbird Jazz club.

I found out in the interval that there were lots of musicians in the audience and quite a number of bass players who were very impressed with the sound I was getting from my basses and my rig. One guy told me that he thought the bass sound was fantastic and was very surprised at the clarity that the basses had especially the higher notes had which he said reminded him of the sound Chris Squire has when using a pick.

I know the guitarist set up his video camera to film the gig but I haven't heard any feedback from him. From where it was placed though it would have got a healthy blast from my bass rig so i don't expect much from a sound point of view.   A few people have taken some photo's but I haven't got many of  them yet. Just these

Just found a video that the keyboard players wife put up on you tube. The sound isn't that great but It may have been done on a mobile phone.   jazzyvee  (Message edited by jazzyvee on July 18, 2011)

I still don't do enough bass gigs really to create a consistent sound that I can recognise so I'm always unsure about how the bass sounds out front. This was a back line setup and a very small vocal pa for sax and keyboards. The location in the building is primarily glass, steel, granite/marble with a carpeted area where we were playing.

I know I was standing too close to the cab to hear the sound properly but from there the bass was fine in the first half. Then after chatting to a couple of bass player mates they told me the sound was very boomy on the bottom end which is common in that venue. So I removed the some of the bottom end with the F1-x which I was told sounded much better out front but far too thin from my position.

Thanks. Aren't sound and acoustics interesting. This video clip has the bass sounding very boomy. Yesterday evening I got hold of another video taken in front of the stage area and the sound is very light and bass shy.

Looks great!

I played a gig in a room like that with a steel drum band a few years back.  So much reflected sound that it sounded like four people banging out chords on pianos instead of a couple of steel drums.  Fun gig, regardless.

If you can get some distance between you and your cabinet, you'll better be able to judge how it sounds in the room.  In a big room like that, though, it's always going to be mushy and inarticulate unless you're staring into the speaker cabinet at close range.

The backing track is Buenos Aires by Stanley Clarke from the Live at the Greek album

We love doing this track.
