Quote from: garyhead on June 04, 2026, 02:16:04 PMMy two doublenecks came with names created by their original owners.  Years later one person tried to give it a new name and created a bit of kerfuffle in a couple threads and was back to the original name once it returned to the USA. I named my Classico 6-String because it's the only 6-string they made.  It's the Orphan because that's how I found it abandoned (no electronics) on the shipping dock at Alembic.  It's been on a stand in the living room now for 28 years.  I guess the one-off instruments should have unique names. IF that Series 1.5 ever leaves the mothership, it will get a name as it's been discussed these past 7 years.
Well.....It's finally NEW BASS DAY!  80-1684 is going to a new home with seven siblings.  Gregory wants me to "live with it awhile" before making the final decision. Fair enough....
But, as my sister-in-Law said many years ago on purchasing a precocious Lab puppy.  She said "as soon as I touch it, it's mine!"  Lucy Marie lived a wonderful 14 years and never lost her puppy inner self.
That's kind of how I felt playing 80-1684 at the Mothership in 2023 but alas, it was promised to another.
There is a wonderful 7-year thread on 80-1684 if you do a search.  If you start it, you'll understand the meaning of its new name:  GREG'S JOY
The amount of work & love that went into this bass needs to be recognized. I'm proud to have "Greg's old bass."

Cheers Greg!

PS. Mica, I need another bottle of polish!  There's A LOT of square foot of lumber to treat.
Purely by coincidence, I had lunch with Joy (the real-life one) this past Wednesday. It so happened a restaurant we used to hit for lunch regularly was going out of business, so I suggested we go one more time. She used to eat there so often some years ago they actually named a lunch special after her... her very own mushroom & swiss cheeseburger.

I named an Alembic bass guitar after her because they were the same age, almost to the day. Funny girl. Granny Joy now... at 47.

Mum bought me my first bass from woolworths for £14 when i was in my mid teens. Ironically, the first bassline I learnt to play was Papa was a rolling stone. The only instrument of mine she had ever had a play with when I handed it to her my series I maple shorty. Sadly she died on the same day that is mentioned in the opening line of that song. So that one she kind of named herself.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

woolworth's.  what a flashback. dunno about across the pond but they're long extinct over here.  there's an old east denver building just a coupla blocks from me with the old-school woolworth's logo engraved into the threshold.  it's quit lovely.  maybe i take a pic the next time i walk the beast past there.  btw nobody loves ya like yer mom.  mine bought me my first stage bass amp (an acoustic 136 IIRC).

as far as naming bassesses, i'll take a shot:

'95 fretless essence 5-string - A.K.A. the cheap bass. not derogatory by any means, it's simply because out of all my instruments, it's the one i paid the least for.

shop night fretless - A.K.A. the A-Bass.  it was listed as an anniversary model, turns out it's much more than that, but it does have anniversary electronics, so there ya go.

Series II 5-string - A.K.A. the ebony amazon. got tons o'ebony in it.  just a freaking beast to play.  and heft.

'18 Mark King Deluxe 5-string - A.K.A. the pretty bass.  got the buckeye burl top. a real knockout, especially up under the coloured lights.

'18 Dragonwing - can't really call it anything else but the dragonwing.

cheers!
Been down...now i'm out!
